If it ever existed it was when this man played. Stan was himself aware the football world had changed and he had pretty determined views that in many ways it was not for the better. The outrageous wages, the poor sportsmanship, attacks on referees and tackling 'which is little short of common assault' were all things he felt were not part of the football he once graced. And you have to accept that in a career which spanned from 17 years to 50 years in which he was never cautioned once by a referee he might have a point. This was despite some of the tighest marking of any player ever in the game of football (but that is not to say the leg breaking tackles the modern game specialises in).

His funeral was on Friday 3rd March 2000, the funeral cortege took him round the edge of the pitch in a jam-packed Britannia Stadium, everyone had turned out to pay their last respects to the local man who started his career at the Staffordshire club. Extractions: Soccer Features Page The Sports Page (c) 1995 Reuter Information Service LONDON (Jul 17, 1995 - 13:42 EDT) - Clevedon Town said on Monday that England soccer legend Sir Stanley Matthews will not be playing for them in a friendly match this month, contradicting an announcement they made on Friday that he would do so. "It's all become rather embarrassing," said Steve Fey, the manager of the minor league club from the west of England. "The idea that Sir Stanley might play was a very tongue-in-cheek comment after all, he is 80. However we do not want the public to be disappointed at not seeing him playing and Sir Stanley has asked me to clarify the position." Last Friday Fey said that Matthews, one of the all-time greats of English soccer and still fit and sprightly at 80, would play for them for 15 minutes in a friendly match against second division Bristol City on July 30. Fey met Sir Stanley when he spoke at a dinner in the Somerset town earlier in the summer. On Friday Fey said he asked Matthews to play in the match, addding: "It was a bit cheeky but as a joke I asked him if he would consider signing on as a player for us," said Fey.

Extractions: What is a legend? A legend is someone grandparents and parents revere. They are the ones children ask about; names that live in the minds of generations. Superstars? No. The word is meaningless, worn smooth by a thousand glib TV tongues, and hacked to pieces on a million typewriters. A legend in a sport leaves his mark on the game. He transcends it. Playing well isn't enough. Winning isn't enough. Records aren't enough. It is only when a man seizes the game and shapes it, bends it, changes it by the force of will, skill, and body that he becomes a legend. That is what these five men did to soccer and that is why their names will live as long as there are soccer balls and people to kick them. Pele had skills and moves never before imagined; Sir Stanley Matthews, an innovator who raised dribbling to a high art; Lev Yashin, a new style of goalkeeper who brought "keepers everywhere out of their nets and into the games;" Alfredo di Stefano, the game's first truly complete player; and Nandor Hidegkuti, the tactical genius who opened the game up for latterday offensive tactics. Here's a closer looking at the soccer giants: Pele Sir Stanley Matthews He was Bob Cousy with a soccer ball. Matthews was a magician in baggy shorts who played for England's national team until he was 40, and was playing first division soccer well into his 50's. As a dribbler he could make the ball do everything but sing "God Save the Queen." You can still see his influence on players from World Cup to sandlot. The ball was merely an extension of his foot.
