SIR STANLEY AND CHUMS door school friend, a keen Red, Wilf Johnstone a fine soccer and cricket the verysad passing of one of the greatest lights of football sir stanley matthews. http://www.kolumbus.fi/lfcsupporters/woodie/stanley.htm
Extractions: SIR STANLEY AND CHUMS Matthews was the jewel of such company. He did not score many goals but I would love $50 for every one of his assists. Very rarely did a player actually remove the ball from his feet - by sliding tackle, by block or foul means. He was a genius at evading the out-thrust foot. The danger was he would bring, one, two, three, and then four defenders out to seal him off, and would then pass to an unmarked colleague. He could pass clinically along the ground or in the air. And, he was that much misused term, at least in England, a real gentleman. I must have seen him some twenty-five times and never saw him lose his temper. As some readers might know, in World War 2, a large segment of the Royal Air Force was stationed in Blackpool which was how they came to have so many great players turning out for them. There were some excellent games in that war-time league, which was arranged so that there would not be much travelling. In war time, many trains were used for National defence purposes so long unnecessary journeys were discouraged and frequently very difficult. But those years were exciting for a young red's supporter. I saw the Pool centre-forward Cyril Done score six goals in a 9-1 rout of Southport - one goal with a header with Cyril being horizontal some four feet off the ground. Done was also a member of the 46-47 team and scored prolifically. In war time, balls in kock-up games were often made from any material you could find. We used to roll up at Cadby Hall in Penny Lane and play with rolled up and fastened jerseys. Eventually we got an old football, and it lasted about eight years. The school had footballs but they were never new. Back to the Reds and players of the Matthews' era...

Extractions: /sport/soccer Home Business Times readRight Big Break ... Contents 21 June 1998 SIR Stanley Matthews, at 83 still arguably England's most famous footballer, is shying away from visits to World Cup tournaments because of England's hooligan supporters , writes SY LERMAN. "I just can't relate to these people," said Matthews from his home in Stoke. "It was unheard of when I played the game. If this is what the game has come to, I'd rather stay at home and watch the World Cup on TV. "Everything the game stands for is in direct contradiction to the way they behave. I sometimes wonder who these people are. Can they actually be Englishmen?" Matthews, once a regular visitor to South Africa, which he termed his "adopted country", has also been deterred by Johannesburg's violent environment from maintaining his enduring links with the country. I cannot believe these thugs are soccer followers. "But," he added, "perhaps I'm the one who is out of step. I seem to come from another era - one in which sportsmanship and playing the game meant as much as winning." And Matthews is unlikely to be drawn back to either Johannesburg or the World Cup until the thugs are, by and large, eliminated.

Extractions: Friday, March 3, 2000 Happy memories of soccer great, Sir Stanley By Cecil Holbrook EAST LONDON The football world is still mourning the passing away of Stanley Matthews, a soccer legend with few peers. It would probably be true to say in the UK he was the biggest one-man drawcard of the last century. Such was his almost magical pulling power, an extra 10 to 15 000 spectators could be expected. Tales there are aplenty of his unique mastery of the ball, in particular of course, the 1953 FA cup final when he personally scuttled Bolton Wanders. Among his unique repertoire was his ability to pinpoint crosses from the wing - perhaps David Beckham is using him as a role model. Never was this more forcibly demonstrated than in one particular match. It was the day of the leather ball with a lace. Five times he crossed the ball from the wing and five times his partner in crime, Stanley Mortenson, headed goalwards. Four headers were bang on target but the fifth hit the crossbar. Mortenson blamed Matthews for the miss: "I had to head the lace," he explained. In the modesty stakes Matthews had very few equals.

Coventry Web - Writers Corner - AN ECHO OF HEROES ' in the old North American soccer League when I was a correspondent for a popularmagazine. I played one which featured sir stanley matthews, who came to Los http://www.coventryweb.co.uk/editorials/writers/StanleyMatthews.html
Extractions: COV-WEB REPORTS It would have been September, 1942 when I first saw Coventry City play a wartime league match against Leicester City. Along with the three Webb brothers, John, Brian and Peter, neighbors whose home in King Street had been totally destroyed in the blitz, I caught the 1.57 pm Inner Circle bus outside the Rialto Casino in Moseley Avenue, which deposited us in Swan Lane and we made our way to a spot just to the left and behind the goal at the Nicholls Street end. The City won 5-1 that day and a lean, swarthy center forward called George Lowrie, who looked and moved like Brazils Romario of recent years, scored three. The pitch already hallowed ground in my eyes had a slight dip near the center line in front of the Highfield Road stand where a bomb crater had been filled in. We were totally thrilled by the game and Lowrie became an instant lifelong hero.
