Extractions: In a complete surprise, unheralded Canada won the right to say it is the best team in the region. By advancing all the way to the final and then defeating heavily favored Colombia, it was able to accomplish what the U.S. team and favorites Mexico as well as Colombia, South Korea and Jamaica, for that matter, could not win the fifth staging of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada, the 85th ranked team in the world, benefited from a series of great performances from West Ham-based goalkeeper Craig Forrest in their staggering victories over Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and then Colombia. The keeper's efforts earned him tournament MVP honors. This Gold Cup will not just go down as an overachievement for the Canadians, but disappointing performances by the favorites.

Extractions: STOKE-ON-TRENT, England, March 3 (Reuters) MATTHEWS PLAYED FOR JUST TWO CLUBS A HUMBLE MAN : "That was very moving... very nice, I am glad I was here," Jack Charlton said outside the church. "I remember grabbing his shirt in a match once, and he just stopped and looked at me and I felt about 'this' big... I don't think I ever grabbed anybody's shirt again after that." Matthews made his international debut at the age of 19 and collected his last cap in 1957, aged 42, against Scotland. But his most famous game was for Blackpool, whom he joined from Stoke in 1947, in the 1953 FA Cup final against Bolton at Wembley, thereafter always called "The Matthews Final." With 30 minutes remaining, Bolton were leading 3-1 when Matthews, his baggy shorts flapping around his knees, inspired the comeback which has now become part of football's folklore. He tore the Bolton defence to pieces, set up three goals and was carried off the Wembley pitch shoulder-high by his jubilant team mates.

The 1994 World Cup ignited an interest in soccer collecting and that interest is beginning to spread more and more toward the older cigarette cards. This interest is reflected in the modern world by the appearance of "web pages" on the internet dedicated to cigarette cards and collecting. Pre World War II British cigarette cards are among the most collectible and most popular items for soccer enthusiasts. These unique items present a different period to us. They are "low tech" items, a far cry from the shiny new cards being produced today. The cards themselves can be miniature works of art, with well drawn pictures and portraits. Being distributed in packs of cigarettes, they could be displayed in special albums that cost "one penny" to purchase.

Extractions: Sir Stanley Matthews: A legend passes Grazie, Turquia! Myers picks up the pieces in Italian rout Ankara - Turkish Daily News The first time I ever bunked off school to watch a TV soccer match it was because Stanley Matthews was playing. Now one of the greatest ever figures in the English game has passed away peacefully at age 85. In the drab world of a post-war Britain in which food was still rationed and jobs were scarce as the nation struggled for economic recovery, soccer was for many a form of escapism, a temporary release from the grim reality of their lives. Matthews was its finest exponent and by far its most popular figure. What made him great? Remarkable close ball control and an ability to send his marker spinning every which way with feints and sudden deceptive changes of pace. As with all the great players, there was a buzz of expectation whenever he received the ball. We cannot say his death marks the end of an era because the Matthews era is already long gone. It was the era of baggy shorts and standard-issue haircuts. Soccer then bore very little resemblance to the game as it is played now. Players were rigidly specialized and expected to perform only their own particular tasks.

Extractions: English football legend Sir Stanley Matthews has died at the age of 85. Matthews played in the professional English game as a 51 year old and was the first player to be knighted by the Queen for his services to football in 1964. After retiring as a player he toured the world as a coach after moving to Canada and worked at a summer Soccer School in Malta. He was manager of Port Vale for a short time in his native Stoke but they were thrown out of the football league for irregular payments to players in his only season as manager. Matthews retired in May 1966 from top flight football by leading Stoke City to promotion in a season that saw Stoke home games cause some complaints. Before sell out crowds Stoke would bring local firemen to their Victoria ground stadium and water the pitch because Matthews liked a soft surface. His international career was cut short by six years as he served in the British Army as a sargeant major in the Second World War but was part of the English side who competed in the 1950 World Cup final and lost 1-0 to the USA.
Extractions: Although there has been no official announcement from number 10 Downing Street it is widely thought that the PM, a big soccer fan, will attend to pay his last respects at the funeral taking place in the city of Stoke On Trent. A rumour had been circulating that the Queen would also attend although this looks unlikely. Matthews funeral looks set to bring the entire city to a complete standstill. Stoke On Trent has a population of 260,000 people and it is thought that as many as 200,000 people will be either on the streets, lining the funeral procession or attending St Peters church in Stoke where the service will be broadcast to those outside. Sir Stanley Matthews is without doubt the most famous person to emerge from the city of Stoke On Trent and although it would be crass to compare his death to that of Diana Princess of Wales, residents have been speaking of a air of sadness over the city not unlike that day when the Princess died two and a half years ago. As such it is thought that most of the city will turn out to pay their respects to Sir Stan who was born, grew up, lived and worked and died amongst them.

Extractions: Subscriptions By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - Sport is no exception to life. However much we focus on progress, all of us are shaped by the past. On Wednesday, amid a shower of soccer international matches around the world, the death of Sir Stanley Matthews, the first knight of his sport, had a compelling, emotional effect. The fame of Matthews, ''the wizard of the dribble,'' transcended boundaries even before television could do the job; he was famous in Rio, in Budapest, in South Africa, in Malta and in Canada. And though Matthews was a man of his time - which spanned, at the professional level, an astonishing 33 years, from 1932 to 1965 - the specialist right winger created an unrivaled aura that survives his death. How strange, almost surreal, to be at Wembley, a stadium synonymous with the Matthews legend, on Wednesday night, and to learn just before England and Argentina played a 0-0 draw that the knight was no more.

Two arms, two legs and blessed with gifts of varying degrees to move a ball around a turf field so that we can dream. Lucky guys, these athletes, born in the right time and place - and one of them born to be the man who strikes the golden goal of 1998. If he's French - say Zinedine Zidane - then no matter his impoverished upbringing or his foreign ancestry, he is in line to follow Michel Platini, honored with the title Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. If he's English - Alan Shearer or Michael Owen - he will be knighted. It might take a little time, but the Brits always get there. This weekend, just in time to instill the right spirit to the ''lads'' of '98, a former player, Geoff Hurst, is to be knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Hurst had one very special day. He scored the three goals that won the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley Stadium in London.
