Bobby Charlton, Gordon Banks, Tom Finney and other former greats joined relatives and fans for a moving funeral service at a packed church in Matthews' home city of Stoke-on-Trent. Some 5,000 fans went to Stoke City's Britannia Stadium to see the funeral cortege drive around the edge of the field. The coffin was draped with flowers arranged in the shape of Matthews' No. 7 shirt in the Stoke City team colors of red and white. Matthews, who was still playing top flight soccer at age 50, was the first soccer player to be knighted shortly after his retirement in 1965.
