Search Table of Contents When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.

Extractions: FT. LAUDERDALE, FL (September 30, 2001) Kansas City was haunted by two former Wizards on Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium, as Chris Henderson and Preki notched the Miami Fusion's goals in a series-clinching 2-1 Game Three victory in the quarterfinal round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. With the win, No. 1 seed Miami captured their first-ever "first-to-five-point" playoff series 6-3 and will meet the No. 5 seed San Jose Earthquakes in the semifinals. Henderson scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute, while Preki tallied a critical game-tying goal in the first half. Both had been members of Kansas City's MLS Cup Championship winning squad of a year ago, but were traded to Miami in two separate offseason deals as Wizards coach Bob Gansler looked to upgrade his team. After a tentative opening 10 minutes by both teams, the Wizards took a surprising 1-0 lead in the 13th minute courtesy of a towering header by forward Onandi Lowe. From the left flank, Wizards defender Mike Burns dribbled by Fusion midfielder Lazo Alavanja and created space for himself to send a measured cross into the Fusion penalty box. Relatively unchallenged, Lowe rose above the defense and cleanly nodded the ball past Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando and into the top left corner of the goal. Miami wasted little time in drawing even, knotting the score at 1-1 less than a minute later on a 25-yard shot by midfielder Preki. In the 14th minute, Miami's crafty attacker was the recipient of some good fortune, when his low, sharply driven freekick was deflected by the Wizards' defensive wall. The unpredictable redirection left Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola flat-footed as the ball found the right side of the net.
