Extractions: Tottenham manager George Graham had the chance to buy Robbie Keane, but didn't rate him highly enough, the English High Court was told yesterday! Graham believed Keane would struggle to establish himself in the Spurs first team, according to Director of Football David Pleat. Pleat was giving evidence in the Alan Sugar libel case in which the jury must essentially decide whether Tottenham's lack of success was due to former owner Sugar or the club's managers. He told the court that Graham had also spurned the chance to sign Croatian striker Davor Suker and England midfielder Kieron Dyer. "I believed Robbie Keane was a top, top, top striker but the manager didn't want to make an offer. He didn't consider he wanted to purchase Keane," Pleat testified. "I thought he was one of the few outstanding young players in Britain but the manager decided not to buy him because he wasn't certain he would be a regular first-team striker." Arsenal bought Suker, while Dyer moved from Ipswich to Newcastle for £6.5 million. Republic of Ireland striker Keane went from Wolves to Coventry for a similar fee before moving on to Inter Milan for £12 million and then back to Leeds for a further £12.5 million within the space of two seasons! back to Irish abroad stories back to main headlines

Extractions: Robbie Keane comes face to face with his former team-mates tonight as struggling Coventry travel to Elland Road in the Premiership. Robbie was a cult hero at Highfield Road and his move to Italy caused much anger with the fans and manager Gordon Strachan. The Irish striker was never given a chance in Italy so he decided to move back to the Premiership to join Leeds United. Since his return he has hit four goals - which will have Coventry quaking in their boots tonight. Robbie has nothing but respect for Coventry and their manager. He said: "I'll always be grateful to Gordon for giving me that chance. "Unfortunately it didn't work out at Milan because they had a change of coach soon after I went there. But it was still a great experience." Coventry go into tonight's game knee-deep in the relegation zone and manager Strachan knows the dangers of the youngster that he snapped up from Wolves. The fiery wee man believes that Robbie never got a chance to fail in Italy. Strachan said: "It won't affect him at all. Whether you call him the best player in the world or the worst player in the world, it never affects Robbie.

Kickin - Irish Soccer News - Robbie Keane Irish international robbie keane could be on his way back to the San Siro afterscoring another cracking goal for Leeds last night his fifth since joining http://www.kickinmagazine.ie/robbiekeane122001.htm
Extractions: Leeds 1 Coventry Irish international Robbie Keane could be on his way back to the San Siro after scoring another cracking goal for Leeds last night - his fifth since joining the Yorkshire club on loan. Another class performance by Keane against his former club edged Leeds into the top half of the table for the first time in weeks - and the Dubliner capped it with a spectacular goal from an overhead kick. Alvaro Recoba, one of Keane's main rivals at Inter, has fallen under a cloud. He is one of a number of players in the Italian league being investigated or passport irregularities. But Keane is worth his place in Serie A on merit. Marcello Lippi, the man who signed him from Coventry, is on record as saying he doesn't understand why the Tallaght youngster is not in Inter's first team. New coach Marco Tardelli will continue to hear glowing reports of his player's performances in the Premiership - and so will the Neroazzuri fans. And they could force the hand of Tardelli or president Massimo Moratti. But on this evidence, Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale should fight might and main to hang onto Keane. He was the difference between the sides last night and his presence alone earned Leeds two precious points they wouldn't otherwise have bagged.

Extractions: LONDON (Reuters) Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane increased the pressure on Leeds United boss Terry Venables with a stunning strike against his former side on Sunday. A morale-sapping 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane left Leeds languishing in 14th place in the English Premier League, just four points above the relegation places. In Sunday's other match, Charlton Athletic secured only their second home league win of the season with a 3-1 defeat of Blackburn Rovers. Keane, reluctantly sold by Venables to Spurs for seven million pounds (US$11.08 million) in August, tormented his old boss and team mates with a virtuoso performance that featured a superbly executed goal from the Ireland international. Venables, who managed Spurs from 1987-1991, had received the supportive words of his chairman Peter Ridsdale on Tuesday but admitted his struggling side "must do better" after they were outplayed in the opening 45 minutes. "Things have not gone well as I would have hoped. It's been very, very tough but we must do better," Venables told Sky TV following their eighth league defeat of the campaign. "Not a lot went right in the first half. We didn't play very well and they played exceptionally well and pulled us about.
