Extractions: Letters Great web page - I look forward to reading it and then sharing comments and observations with friends in Brazil, including a die-hard Flamengo fan. I was in Brazil last December shortly after DC United (my home team) beat Vasco de Gama. Surprisingly to me, no one wanted to talk about it. In fact, it was as if it couldn't even be considered - just unthinkable that an upstart, unknown AMERICAN team would steal something like the championship from a Brazilian team. Anyway, thank you! I enjoy reading the page and frequently check for updates. Obrigado, Richard Dolesh dolesh@erols.com Dear Sir, (...) Whilst I have reservations about the forthcoming World club Championship in Brazil, I wish the tournament and its organizers good luck with their venture. What we must not allow though is the devaluing of the South American versus European champions, held each year in Tokyo, which to the majority of us, is and will always be the true World Club Championship. With this in mind, I have long felt that the Libertadores Cup and European Champions League, from the semi finals onward, should be held on the same Wednesdays, with the first leg of the Libertadores cup Final, played on the same day as the UEFA Cup Final, and both the 2nd leg of the Libertadores Final and the European Champion League Final, played on the same day one week later.

Extractions: Suggestion Box Previous Next Menu Things Japanese - Soccer World Cup 2002 Part 1 Part 2 The biggest sporting event in Japan's history was the 1964 Olympic games, which brought Japan to the attention of the world and for which the Shinkansen was especially built and debuted the first use of computers to keep results. It was reported to be the most expensive Olympics ever (at the time) with $3 billion spent to put Japan on the world map. Since then, aside from the Winter Olympics in Nagano in 1998, Japan has not held a sporting event to match this. This will all change next June when the biggest sporting event in the world is co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The 2002 Soccer World Cup will be the first to be held in Asia and the first to be co-hosted by two countries. Many people were surprised when the announcement was made by FIFA in 1996 that the competition would be hosted jointly by two countries who have a turbulent history. Both countries were unhappy at the decision - South Korea felt that he had shown, by hosting the Summer Olympics in 1988 that it could stage the World Cup by itself and Japan, through the successful launch of the J-League in Japan, thought it had the infrastructure to also host the competition on it's own. Japan and South Korea fought a bitter campaign to host World Cup 2002 with each nation accusing the other of bribery and underhand tactics - amongst other things. Since then, relations between the two hosts had steadily improved until July this year when the issue of a new controversial school textbook authorized by the Japanese Ministry of Education. The issue centered around Japanese colonization of Korea from 1910 to 1945 with the school texts perceived to distort history and attempt to gloss over Japan?fs wartime atrocities. Co-hosting has led, up to now at least, to a gradual liberalization of the ban in South Korea on Japanese contemporary culture and there has also been a significant increase in the number of visitors between the two countries.

Dunga, 35, on Friday joined Internacional, the Brazilian soccer club he left 14 years ago before embarking on a career abroad, according to a report from the Agencia Estado news agency. The hard-tackling midfielder, who captained Brazil in the 1994 and 1998 World Cup Finals and is revered throughout the country, signed a two-year contract with the first division club. The signing is a coup for Internacional, who play in the southeastern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre and finished 12th in last year's national championship. Dunga recently completed a four-year spell of playing club soccer in Japan. He has also played in Germany and Italy. With his face painted and indigenous necklaces jangling around his neck, Dunga, who led Brazil's national side to victory in the 1994 soccer World Cup in the United States, switched to the indigenous side in the game's final minutes, just in time to score. 'We are here to support our culture, to give our culture strength,' said Dunga, who ended his career two years ago with Porto Alegre. As the national games unfold, athletes will try their hand at a range of sports from archery to athletics to 'xikunahiti,' a sport practiced by the Pareci and Enawene-Nawe peoples, involving two 10-man teams passing a ball around on their heads.
