Extractions: By CHRISTOPHER CLAREY I t was a smooth night for the French and the Brazilians, and a rough night for the Americans and the Spaniards. The draw for the 1998 World Cup finals was held in the tradition-rich confines of Marseilles' Stade-Velodrome, and when the last shivering soccer celebrity had pulled the last name out of the transparent bowls on the chilly outdoor stage, the 32 teams had been divided into eight first-round groups, and the world had its quadrennial conversation piece. Over the next six months, there will be debates on every continent, with the possible exception of Antarctica, over the relative merits of the teams that will compete in France from June 10 to July 12. Most of the debaters will conclude that Brazil is the favorite. Under Coach Mario Zagallo, the defending champions are more offensive-minded than when they won the cup for a record fourth time in 1994 in Los Angeles. For anyone needing proof, Ronaldo, Zagallo's new striker, provided the evidence. In an exhibition all-star match that preceded the draw, Ronaldo finished with two goals in a 5-2 victory for the Rest of the World over the Europeans. The Brazilians have other new stars in Denilson and the brilliant fullback and free-kick virtuoso Roberto Carlos. They have veteran stars in Leonardo, Cafu, Dunga and, if he can regain his form of last summer, Romario.

Extractions: Even after you've changed the names, you'll notice that the commentators still call the teams by their fake names. Konami have included an option in the edit-mode (go to Edit Club Teams) to be unlocked though, by which you can let the commentator call the real names of the club-teams ! Therefor you have to win the Konami-cup with any clubteam. Some of the names still aren't there, like Arsenal (which is still called London) and Juventus (still referred to as Piemonte). Once you've unlocked this feature, you'll also notice that the developpers have clearly chosen to let gamers create other teams. The list of teams which you can let be announced by the commentators is pretty extensive ! Here are some of the teams included: Aberdeen, Berlin, Birmingham, Bremen, Bruxelles (the first Belgian glimpse in the game ! finally...), Coventry, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Goteborg, Ipswich, Koln, Lisbon, Nantes, Porto, Stutgart and Utrecht. Another original feature can be unlocked by winning the Asia Cup with Japan ! Win this cup and you'll be awarded more realistic faces for the Japanese players in the Player Edit Mode ! It won't be easy though to find the right face for the right player !
Extractions: Subscriptions By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - Never in his wildest flights of fantasy did Lilian Thuram imagine himself scoring the two goals with which France became a World Cup finalist for the first time. Defenders are, in essence, suppressers of dreams and even a right back as adventurous as Thuram had not scored once in his 37 previous matches for his country. Yet the message, in the form of canvas, was on the wall. In a Paris gallery not far from Stade de France where Thuram provided the brushstrokes of history, a painting that could almost have been a premonition depicted him sweeping the ball powerfully, majestically toward the goal. The art was there before the act. Another painting in the collection depicted what could only be Ronaldo, the Brazil center forward, muscling his way past a defender in French blue. ''I never met them, any of them,'' said Aroldo Governatori, the artist. ''I made these paintings two years ago. I feel an affinity to those who perform - in music, in ballet, in football. Where you have life, you have art.'' Really? The World Cup final was, as Governatori's instinct had seemed to pre-record, between France and Brazil. But Ronaldo nearly didn't make it, and for the good of his health arguably should not have. Laurent Blanc, the defender who most closely resembles the man attempting to go stride for stride with Ronaldo in the painting, was banned from the final because a Croatian opponent, Slaven Bilic, feigned injury in the semifinal and Blanc was red-carded.

"IRON MAN" MARCELO BALBOA COMES TO COLORADO; U.S. NATIONAL TEAM CAPTAIN TO LEAD RAPIDS SOCCER TEAM DENVER (Monday, Feb. 5, 1996) Taking a huge step toward Major League Soccer's first championship, the Colorado Rapids on the eve of the MLS Inaugural Player Draft signed defender Marcelo Balboa, among the most celebrated Americans ever to play the game. Known as the "Iron Man" for his steely service to the U.S. National Team and his role as the United States' team captain, the 28-year-old Balboa has distinguished himself in two World Cups as a crunching defender who enjoys moving into attack, characteristics that bode well for the Rapids in 1996. "With the addition of the United States' most exciting player and team captain in Marcelo Balboa, the Colorado Rapids continue their dedication to entertaining soccer on the field," said Rapids General Manager Richard A. Levine. "We are thrilled the league was able to sign Marcelo and delighted that he will playing here in Colorado. As the captain for the U.S. National Team we have gained the finest ambassador for soccer in this country." Balboa joins fellow U.S. National Team members forward Roy Wegerle and midfielder Dominic Kinnear as three of the four marquee plays allocated to the Rapids squad, which open their season April 13 in Kansas City.
