(PANA) In the qualifying competition for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Japan beat North Korea and Hong Kong to come within one match of reaching the finals. But it lost the last qualifying match to South Korea, whose team was made up of professional players. After this, many people said that Japan would not be able to beat foreign teams unless it too started playing professionally. These calls did not result in the immediate launch of a professional soccer league, however. Japanese amateur teams had reached the last eight of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and won the bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and these successes had reinforced the preference for amateurism in the Japanese soccer world. Also, Japan already had soccer teams owned and run by companies, and since 1965 they had competed in the Japan Soccer League. The bronze-medal winning team from the Mexico City Olympics was mainly composed of players from these company teams. However, in the late 1980s Japan was doing poorly in international matches and had failed to qualify for the World Cup and the Olympics. It was only natural that the JSL, whose players had made little impact in international games, would lose popularity.

Extractions: The first Japanese player to be active in a foreign professional league was Yasuhiko Okudera. A fast winger, he played for top German club 1.F.C. Cologne in the Bundesliga from the late 1970s, becoming the first Japanese soccer player to turn professional. Since hanging up his boots, Okudera has shown his wide-ranging abilities as president of Yokohama F.C., a team in the J. League Second Division. A number of Japanese players have followed in Okudera's footsteps and gone abroad. Kazuyoshi Miura went to Brazil when he was 15 to play with top Brazilian team Santos. He came back to Japan for a while, then in 1994 he went to italy to play for Genoa, becoming the first Japanese to appear in the Italian first division, Serie A. In 1999 he also played for Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

Over the years, the sport became popular at schools across the country and in 1921, a national soccer association was set up. But the lack of a professional league and the subsequent low standard of the national team meant that soccer remained a sleeper sport. For years there was only the Japan Soccer League , whose players were basically ordinary employees of their team's sponsor. As with amateur sport everywhere, most players actually had other jobs. Soccer really took off in Japan in the 1990's. The first professional league, the

Dunga had a blazing row in the first half with forward Bebeto in which other members of the squad were seen to physically restrain his attack on Ronaldo's partner up front. Bebeto had given the ball away and this led to the concession of a freekick to Morocco on the edge of the Brazilian area Dunga offered to quit the captaincy after the game and again at training the next afternoon when the squad were assembled for a meeting. The midfielder received support from Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo as well as senior squad members like Taffarel and Aldair. Denilson, Rivaldo and Leonardo also supported the captan who had led the country to victory in 1994 in the USA. If Brazil win the World Cup in France Dunga will make history as the only player to captain two winning sides.

He has been likened to Dunga in the Brazil side but he lacks that players powerful shot and uncompromising attitude in the tackle. He passes the ball short rather than long and is often found sitting ahead of the defence and winning the ball for Durrant Brown to come forward to distribute. He has developed an interest in coaching with the local Harbour View side he plays his club football for and is trusted to direct the players on the pitch particularly in organising the defence at corners and freekicks.

Extractions: Mario Andrada e Silva of the Jornal do Brasil told me that he devoted himself during Brazil's round-of-16 game against Chile the other night to how many times Dunga lashed out at his teammates, his coach, the referee and even the team medical staff. He yelled 127 times. Ronaldo is thought of globally as an artist, as well as a juicy marketing tool. But in Brazil, a country that has produced Pele, Garrincha, Zico and Tostao, Ronaldo is taken more in stride. He came on the scene at age 16, so he's called Ronaldinho, which is to say "little Ronaldo." He's the world's best striker, but Brazilians regard him less an artist than a missile. And it's Dunga who lights the fire. In the midst of the Brazilian players' celebration of Cesar Sampaio's second goal against Chile, this party-pooper Dunga comes and yanks Ronaldo out of the happy pack and reprimands him. Dunga was mad because Ronaldo had been too far upfield rather than being ready to pounce on a possible mistake by the last defender. The exchange between the two became known because one Brazilian television network has a camera so powerful a viewer can read lips. Ronaldo assured Dunga there would be no more daydreaming. Couldn't he be a bit more polite to his teammates, Dunga was asked Monday at the Brazilians' camp nearby in Ozoir-La-Ferriere. "I do not have the time to approach someone and say, 'Sir, please be aware of your opponent.' Or, 'Would you be kind enough to mark your opponent properly?' If I took the time to be polite, in that time the opponent would score. In the World Cup, if you relax one second you could be out. That's the time it takes to make a fatal mistake."
Extractions: Kings of the World In the next few weeks Brazil will get a chance to go where no mortal has gone before. It will be running in the fields of France in search of the elusive glory of becoming for the fifth time the world's top dog in soccer, of being pentacampeões . No wonder there is little else to talk on Brazilian streets these days besides Ronaldinho, Romário, and Taffarel, the semi-gods who will be carrying the colors of the country and the hopes and anxieties of 160 million souls. In bookstores new fiction and nonfiction works talk about futebol , the same on movie theaters, and hit songs hit the same note. On TV, radio, newsstands and here you cannot escape the rolling little ball filled with Brazil's emotions. Rodolfo Espinoza The Maracanã was packed. Built in Rio for the 1950 World Cup as the world's largest soccer stadium with room for 200,000 spectators this shrine to futebol , the passion of nine out of 10 Brazilians, is still an impressive place despite the state of disrepair in which it has sunk. The Maracanã was packed on April 29, with a crowd willing to give the national team a good-bye party filled with applause, cheering and good wishes. After all, this was their last game before embarking to France where the players intend to win for the fifth time soccer's World Cup trophy. The cheers of Brazil pentacampeão though soon turned into jeers while a visibly lost team couldn't keep its eye on the ball and pose any serious threat to its adversary: Argentina. Frustrated the fans started applauding the Argentines, who ended up winning the friendly that was also a test of the Brazilian
