Extractions: About the Sponsor Welcome to the SOCCER FUTURO website! Brazil is one of the great football nations of the world, a powerhouse of internationally recognised players, with teams taking part in all major FIFA and South American Confederation competitions The CBF ( the Brazilian Football Confederation), a member of both associations, is in charge of the national team, the U-20, the U-17 and the Olympic teams and these have, over the years, led Brazil to carry off more prizes than any other country in the world. Brazil is a four-time world champion (Cup Winner in 58. 62, 70 and 94) and a three-time U-20 champion (83, 85 and 93). Its U-17 Team was world champion in 1997. It has won two Olympic silver medals (84 and 88) and one bronze (96). For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, it will be going for gold, a Brazilian dream which Ricardo Texeira, the President of the CBF, is striving to make come true. More recently, womens football has been making inroads throughout the country. In South America, the womens team remains unbeatable. Elsewhere, Brazilian women players are starting to show they will soon achieve the same celebrity status as the men. In the Atlanta Olympics, they got as far as the semi-finals, ending up in fourth place.

Extractions: Kawabuchi Chairman, after the 2002 World Cup, Japan's soccer and J-League will continue. Besides the youth program, do have other plans for soccer? KAWABUCHI: When J-League was inaugurated, the stadiums were packed with supporters when Korea National Team or the other less competitive teams from Asia visited us. Our clubs were also financially stable too. Though in our 4th year, there were less supporters coming to the stadiums. We could not pack the stadiums anymore even with the help of strong teams from Korea. All the attendants who brought themselves to the stadiums were not all of soccer supporters. It was a fad to some of these attendants. K-League has experienced this once. Now the attendants are slowly increasing with true soccer fans. In the near future I would like to start something like the Champions League of Europe with the top 4 teams from J and K League to play. With such inter-league games to be played, we could create a foundation of a inter continental league. As for now, this is very difficult to be funded unless someone sponsors us. Though we must ask our fans if this is what they want. I wish we could start something with K-League first. We could also add China's C-League into this. We could have a tri-country league. This could help level up soccer in Far East Asia. Instead of being the top 3 of the Far East, we must pass by this and face the world's level. First, J-League must start something with our neighboring K-League on a yearly base. This could take some time to meet.

Extractions: Contact: Grant Madsen When these Brigham Young University soccer hooligans get together, crowd control is unnecessary. After all, they're engineering students more concerned with making their robot soccer players follow programming instructions than they are about causing a ruckus. When the tournament was over, Team Dunga, named for the famous Brazilian National Team goalie, was triumphant. The winning team, which consisted of Cuyler Hansen, Brandon Hales and Neil Jensen, took home $1,600 in donated prize money. "It's very satisfying that something we put so much work into paid off," says Hales. Faculty advisor Randy Beard says having students work on the robots is a great way to get them ready for their future professions. "This brings together all of the course work they've had during their college careers," says Beard, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering. "They've had classes that have taught them parts of the design equation, but they've never had to put it all together. I'd say for most of them it's their very first design experience." As part of the senior project class, students were required to attend two lectures a week. One lecture addressed the technical aspects of robot creation and the other, taught by a former Hewlett-Packard vice president, provided insight into the business side of engineering.
