Extractions: Photo by Joseph Sywenkyj Simsbury, CT, March 2001.......On the eve of the Chornobyl 15th Anniversary, Ukrainian ice-skating champion Viktor Petrenko invited his friends from the international skating community to help him raise public awareness and funds to help some of the thousands of children who are still being affected by the world's worst nuclear disaster. On March 2d and 3d, at the International Skating Center of Connecticut, Petrenko headlined an all-star cast that included American champion Brian Boitano, French sensation Philippe Candeloro and US Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen in "Viktory for Kids", a two-night benefit performance for the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). Proceeds from the sold-out event will be earmarked for the creation of the Viktor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Petrenko's hometown of Odessa. In an extensive interview with the Hartford Courant and USA Today, Petrenko explained his motivation for organizing this unique benefit performance for CCRF. "I received a lot from my city to get where I am today. That's where I grew up.That's where I learned to skate. Now this is my chance to pay them back." Petrenko described the many people he had seen in Odessa who had survived Chornobyl, only to be stricken with cancer or to see their children stricken with birth defects.

Extractions: NOW "IS IT ALL THAT IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE?" by Randy Gardner As I was coming up through the ranks in pairs skating from the years of 1974-1980, my partner, Tai Babilonia, and I were very often in direct competition with the top pair teams from Russia. My association with the Russian teams was strictly cordial. I was never allowed to get too close but always admired their high standards and work ethics in the discipline. I always wondered what these fine skaters would do after retiring from amateur skating. We Americans had the freedom to turn professional, join an ice show, coach, or go back to school, get a degree and pursue any career we desired. I saw several of the eastern skaters turn to coaching; some went back to college, but they had little opportunity to continue skating at a professional level. Obviously, things have changed since then. As skaters, coaches, and ice rink owners, Europeans have landed on American turf in search of the American dream. One question I would like to ask them: Is it all that it's cracked up to be? As a director and choreographer of many ice shows during the past 11 years, I have been able to work with many foreign skaters and observe their first year as professionals in the United States. They arrive here with the ambition of a child on the first day of school. They all work very hard, and each one of them is a champion in their own right. But does the American public have the same admiration for these skaters that they do for their American brethren? This is an interesting question.

Extractions: My parents and I walked into the arena about an hour early, and a lady asked if we would like to be audience judges. Of course, they didn't believe her, but they agreed to judge the Show Act competition. So, about a half hour before the event, all of the judges met with the referee Tony Paul and he told us how to judge the event, and what to look for. It was very interesting and it made me even MORE excited about the rest of the evening. We found our seats in the second row, center ice, and noticed that we could see the "Kiss and Cry" area, and that we were so close to the rink that some great photos would come out! (at least that's what I thought!)... Around 7:15, the announcement was made that the competition was going to begin, and Sara Simpson & Nicholas Crowers gave an ice dance exhibition. It was skated to "Oye Como Va", but they were quite slow, but still made a very exciting, attractive dance team. Marks: 9.3-9.5. Next, the Fox Valley Skating School gave an exhibition, and then Brian Boitano took to the ice. Although he *must* have been tired after competing at the Grand Slam last night, he didn't show it, and skated a clean program to "Blue" by Eiffel 65. He landed a great triple toe/triple toe, as well as his signature Tano triple lutz. Just excellent! The ice was then resurfaced for the Show Act.

Extractions: Photo by Dana Alessi I'm Rudy's east coast web master for this site (so there is a bias!) and am attending both nights of the Jefferson Pilot Pro Skating Championships at the brand new Bi Lo Center in Greenville, SC, October 9-10. This event features all four disciplines (men and women's singles, pairs, and dance), with three performances from all of the competitors. The men completed two of their programs, the technical and artistic, on Friday night during nearly five hours of wonderful skating. Competitors in the men's event in addition to Rudy were Brian Boitano, Victor Petrenko, Philippe Candeloro, Viacheslaw Zagorodniuk (Zaggy), and Igor Pashkevich. The men led off, with the skaters entering the ice area about 30 feet from where I was sitting. I first saw Laura with the coaches, then Rudy in the sailor suit, so two questions were promptly answered...She is still traveling with him, and he was doing the "Village People" program first. The skaters went out for a six minute warmup, and all did not appear to be well with Rudy, although he didn't seem to be injured. He glanced back at Laura several times, shook his head, and had a bad fall. (Laura, on the other hand, looked gorgeous. The people around us kept asking who she was and were intrigued with how her hair shone under the bright lights as well as the fact she was expecting a baby in mid December!) I hoped maybe I had read something false into the warmup, but when Rudy skated the "Village People" number which he did with great energy night after night on the COI Tour, it just wasn't there. He tried his heart out, but singled the opening triple axel (?) attempt, had a fall, and wasn't the powerhouse he had been all year in this program. To his credit, he got the crowd behind him, and they really enjoyed the lighter number after several more serious offerings. This was one of the first times since Rudy turned professional that I thought he got an ok break on the scores, receiving a total of 97.0, putting him in third place after the technical program behind Brian Boitano and Victor Petrenko. (More about Boitano later.)

Kulik Performs 'best' For Olympic Figure Skating Gold competition continues Sunday with the ice dancing original Final results of figureskating men's singles after viacheslav zagorodniuk, Ukraine 16.0 (8.0, 8.0). http://www.shinmai.co.jp/oly-eng/19980214/0004.htm
Extractions: 19:00- Start Ilia Kulik of Russia pulled off the best free program of the season Saturday night to claim an overwhelming victory in the Nagano Olympic men's figure skating competition. ''It was truly the best skating. I'm proud I'm the Olympic champion,'' said Kulik, who nailed a quadruple jump in one of the few error-free performances of the night at the White Ring ice arena in southern Nagano. The 20-year-old Moscow native, up first in the last group of skaters, opened his free program with a quad toe loop and reeled off eight triples, including one pair in combination and another in sequence, to earn first place votes from all nine judges. Kulik, who also led after Thursday's short program, received seven 5.9s and two 5.8s out of a possible 6.0 points for presentation while scoring between 5.9s and 5.7s for technical merit. The world silver medalist in 1996 was one of two skaters who performed a four-revolution jump Saturday night.

Extractions: 19:00- Start Ilia Kulik of Russia conjured up a magical performance Thursday, taking the lead after the short program of the Olympic men's figure skating competition in Nagano. The 20-year-old Moscow native, who sat out the European championships last month due to a back injury, opened his routine with a clean triple axel-triple toe loop combination and went on to complete a flawless performance at the White Ring ice arena. Kulik, winner of the ISU Champions Series Final held in Germany last December, set the standard early as he skated sixth out of 29 competitors and held onto the lead as reigning world champion Elvis Stojko of Canada and the other medal hopefuls followed. After nailing the triple lutz and double axel and spinning and stepping to the rhythm of ''Revolution,'' Kulik received five 5.9s and four 5.8s out of a possible 6.0 points for presentation while scoring 5.7s and 5.8s for required elements. Five of the nine judges gave the Russian first-place votes while the rest were split between Stojko and American Todd Eldredge.

Kwan won the women's competition at the Lalique Trophy figure skating competition Saturday and Eldredge won the men's event. Both did better in winning world titles in Edmonton, Alberta, last March. Kwan won the free skating with a routine that was a bit less than what would normally please her. "I wasn't very happy, but I was satisfied," Kwan said. "I had a little bobble here and there, but I fought to the end." "Each performance that I do, you have to learn from it and hope to do better next time," Eldredge said. Still, it was the second victory of the season for each, following wins at the Skate America. Kwan, of Torrance, Calif., completed six triple jumps but wobbled on a two jumps and scaled down another. "Sometimes you are not perfect in the air and you can't do anything about it," she said. "You fight and hope you land."
