10 Questions For ... Michael Weiss wife and kids ** my extended family ** our health and happiness ** skating. MICHAELWEISS A 93city tour for John Hancock Champions on ice, then VACATION! http://www.olympic-usa.org/10_questions/021402figure.html
Extractions: Feb. 14, 2002 You are back in the Big Show. Prior to the Nationals, a lot of skating "experts" didn't seem too high on your chances. Did you give yourself a moment to savor that victory or did you immediately refocus on the Olympics? MICHAEL WEISS: Sometimes that is the best part, a victory when people least expect it. Relief is probably the word that comes to mind though. I had high expectations for the National Championships. When things in the short program did not go as I had planned, I was forced to shift gears to survival mode. I am honored to skate for the United States. I believe we have a tremendous team. What kind of self-talk do you engage in during a performance? Are you telling to slow down, or smile or don't fall? Or are you just living the moment? MICHAEL WEISS: You would probably be surprised. Self-talk during my long program at the National Championships was pretty crazy. My body was on autopilot after I missed the first quad and turned around to make another go at it. If I took one more second to think about it, I might not have tried the second quad. I took my chances and it paid off when I landed the quad toe - triple toe. The quad wasn't perfect but from there I had enough confidence to finish what I went there to do ... make that Olympic team. There was no time to muster up courage; it had to be there. I knew it was going to be an amazing feat to pull off considering what I had in front of me. I had to completely change the order of my jumps in order to get the technical requirements I needed. I missed the first quad, replaced the second jump in my program with a quad. I now needed to do something that I had never even done in practice with nine judges and millions watching on TV and in the audience. Talk about pressure! I also had to be careful not to let my artistry suffer. Let's put it this way, there were so many thoughts going through my mind ... good and bad ... it would almost be impossible to write them all down. They come in milli-seconds during the program.

Extractions: You are here: Home Skating Reports Nations Cup 2002 ... Exhibition Nations Cup 2002 - Exhibition The exhibition is usually my favorite part of figure skating competitions and it was the same here, by far the highlight for me! The gala was opened by who skated their short program, unfortunately with more mistakes than in the competition. Susanne Stadlmueller skated a typical ladies program to a GFB: "There You'll be" by Faith Hill. She's an elegant skater, but the program didn't really have any highlights. Andrejs Vlascenko skated his Andrea Bocelli exhibition, a nice program, that I have seen already a few times. skated to "Habanera" from Carmen, I enjoyed their exhibition quite a lot, it was a nice program with some interesting elements, I especially enjoyed the two sbs step sequences that they did, which looked kind of "ice-dancish". Amber Corwin skated to "This Business of Love", a nice program in which she showed a great deal of musicality and that was less boring than your usual ladies exhibition. skated with good speed and ice coverage, but they looked as if they hadn't skated this program very often yet, it looked very unpolished. They skated to a rock ballad, the program was a bit boring.
Figure Skating: What Is A Lutz? An overview of ice figure skating's Lutz jump michael weiss has been known to land quad Lutzes in practice but he was never ableto land one http://ar.essortment.com/lutzfigureskat_rhms.htm
Extractions: Figure skating: what is a lutz? Figure skating jumps are not difficult to understand. Any fan with a quick eye, who knows forwards from backwards left from right can learn to identify common jumps. The Lutz, named after an obscure Italian skater Tomas Lutz, can be as difficult to identify as it is to perform, but like all other figure skating jumps , the Lutz has three parts: take-off, rotation and landing. For female skaters, the Lutz is the hardest jump commonly performed, the money jump. Only two female skaters have ever performed the more difficult triple axel in competition: Midori Ito of Japan and the infamous Tonya Harding of the United States. Only one female skater since Kristi Yamagucci did a triple Lutz-triple toeloop in her 1992 Olympic program has exceeded the difficulty: Irina Slutskaya of Russia performed a triple Lutz-triple loop in her impressive win over Michelle Kwan at the 2000 Grand Prix final. A triple Lutz-double toeloop is commonly seen in ladies' elite skating. The triple Lutz-triple toeloop was the most common combination in mens singles until it was supplanted by the triple axel-triple toeloop in the mid-nineties. Extremely few skaters say that the difficult Lutz is their favorite jump. Michael Weiss of the United States is a notable exception. He is what is known as a Lutzer, someone who loves the Lutz and does it well. bodyOffer(29642) For a counter-clockwise jumper, the Lutz takes off on the right foot with an assist from the left toe pick. The jump rotates in the counter-clockwise direction, an even number of times, and lands on the left foot. For a clockwise jumper, the flip takes off on the left foot. The right toepick is used as an assist. The jump rotates clockwise and lands on the right foot.

Extractions: Paula Slater The men's event for the World Figure Skating Championships began with the qualifying rounds on Monday and ended with the free program Thursday. Although not as strangely eventful as the pairs , the men's discipline, which consisted of 47 competitors, had at least one upset. The qualifying rounds were worth twenty percent of the final score. Michael Weiss from the US, who won the bronze in Worlds last year, was in third place after the qualifying rounds, and Canadian Champion, Elvis Stojko, was in second. Stojko won the world championships, in 1994, 1995, and 1997 as well as the silver at the 98' Olympics. Stojko, who has been fighting an groin injury from that 98' free program, landed a quadruple lutz during practice - a jump never performed in competition. Alexei Yagudin, the reigning two-time world champion from Russia, surprised everyone when he changed his long program from the soundtrack of "

Extractions: Quads, Triples, and Flips Highlight Ice show In the shadow of Todd Eldridge for the past two years, Michael Weiss placed second in last monthís prestigious Skate America competition, defeating Canadaís Elvis Stojko and Russiaís 1994 Olympic Gold Medalist, Alexei Urmanov. The Detroit Free Press said, ìWith his baby daughter in the stands, Weiss finished second in his first major event of the season and proved he was the heir to the U.S. title.î Performing to the music of the Disney movie, ìMulan,î Weiss executed a flawless routine and had the crowd on its feet before he finished. He received a standing ovation at last yearís national championship in Philadelphia when he nearly completed a quadruple Lutz jump in addition to his array of perfect triples. Another Scott Hamilton? With the addition of a back flip to his exhibition program, it certainly seems so. Seasoned Russian pair skaters Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov keep getting better with time. Although this is the pairís last year to tour, reviewers are calling this their best season yet. Bechke and Petrov have completed five tours with Discover Stars on Ice. International Figure Skating magazine says "during last autumn's busy professional competition season, most skaters seemed to have their ups and downsexcept for the pairs team of Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov. In their fifth season as professionals, the 1992 Olympic Silver Medalists from St. Petersburg, Russia hit their stride, going undefeated in six events.î For more information, contact:
A Skating Tribute Article 93 on September 11, who herself had left skating months before and after just daysof practice, took to center ice at Madison Saturday michael weiss called me http://www.toeloopy.com/portfolio/writing/articles/01TributeArticle.htm
Extractions: 6.0 Skate Winter 2002 When "A Skating Tribute" had been originally planned, the show was going to be a gathering of many of the United States' finest figure skaters paying tribute to the 1961 World Team that was killed in a plane crash in Belgium en route to the World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Soon after the crash, the USFSA established the Memorial Fund to honor the memory of the skaters, coaches, and officials who perished that night. The money from the Fund assists skaters in need, and many of those in the show had benefited from this at one point in their careers. On Friday, October 5, some of the greatest figure skaters did gather in Madison Square Garden. But this was more than a night about the people behind the Memorial Fund. This was also a recognition of the spirit of the American soul. Less than a month after the terrorist attacks destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City, a community gathered to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and the family and friends that were left behind. The roster of names was resplendent with Olympic, World, and National champions.

Extractions: CLEVELANDThe only attempted quadruple jump was flawed, and so was the competition. The men's short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships was hyped as a high-flying, aerial circus. Instead, it looked more like amateur hour at the local rink. Defending champion Michael Weiss avoided disaster on an easy jump and is the leader heading into the final over local jumping sensation Timothy Goebel and teenager Matt Savoie following Thursday night's ragged performances. "For me to go out and have a good warmup, save the combo like that and be in first place was pretty good for me," said Weiss, who nearly touched the ice on his second jump, a triple axel, double toe loop combination.

Extractions: BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - World champions Michelle Kwan and Evgeni Plushenko completed perfect seasons Tuesday night by winning the International Figure Skating Challenge. Kwan took an unusual approach to her craft and it paid off very handsomely. She skated in only four events, finishing first at Skate America, the U.S. championships, the world championships and here. The seven-time national champion and five-time world gold medallist isn't sure what the future holds, but she can have no regrets about the present, even if her performance in beating Japan's Fumie Suguri wasn't inspiring. BALTIMORE (AP) - Olympic champion Sarah Hughes withdrew from the Champions on Ice skating tour that begins Friday in Baltimore. Hughes, who finished sixth at last week's world figure skating championships, indicated she was uncertain if she wanted to continue skating. A high school senior, she also is considering several college options, including Harvard, to which she received an early acceptance.
Extractions: Many people are e-mailing me about the version of "Reflection" that Michelle skates to. It is not the version that is on the soundtrack, or in the movie. Someone that knows Lea Salonga, the singer of "Reflection", told me that Disney decided to cut it from the film (don't know why.) In fact, Lea didn't even have a copy of it until Disney sent her one about a month ago. However, when she promotes the film and has to sing the song live, she sings the long version. Her friend did not think it would be available as a single. The whole point of the special was to promote the movie, Mulan . If you would like, you can check out my review of the movie (which turned out to be my favorite summer movie!) Here are the final ratings for the Friday airing of "Reflections on Ice." The ratings were a 4.2 and a 9 share. So, approximately 6.7 million views watched the show. It was ranked 82 out of 116 shows, and was tied with Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. On the CBC airing of "Reflections on Ice", they showed something that the ABC airing did not. Here's what Valerie said about it

Extractions: Ice Skating Milestones I am now ISI Special Skater Level 9! I passed my ISI Special Skater Level 9 test on February 25, 2003the day before we left to go to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada to compete in the North Shore International. There is only one more level in ISI Special Skater, Level 10, and that is my final goal!! I am now doing waltz jumps with a one-foot landing! In Canada, I am Special Olympics Level 2, almost Level 3. There is a little difference in the levels with the USFSA Special Olympics requirements and the Canadian Special Olympics Skating Requirements, which is why I am Level 3 in the USA and Level 2 in Canada. My 3 turns and edges are awesome since getting my new skates! I am enrolled in the low level stroking class at Icesports on Friday afternoons. I am really excited about this class. I am the only Special Skater in this class. I have a nice coach and she works me as hard as the other students. I am not at the top of the class but that's ok because I still love it!!
