Extractions: Nowadays there seems to be a glut of skating shows, tours, and competitions that are almost indistinguishable from one another. Whether it's a mega-tour that criss-crosses North America each year or an over-hyped made-for-TV competition with some name like Rock 'n' Roll Ice Wars Challenge of the Sexes , it all adds up to the same skaters doing the same programs to the same pieces of pop music. EXCLUSIVE OFFERS SportsLine Rewards Click here Since much of figure skating's current popularity is derived from television coverage of competitions such as the Olympic Games, promoters of professional skating events simply copy the competitive format as a way to cash in with as little effort and imagination as possible. They might pay lip service to the notion that audiences want to see skating that emphasizes "artistry" rather than triple jumps, but it seems promoters have not tried to create performance opportunities for pro skaters that are genuinely different from what these skaters did as Olympics-eligible competitors. In the past season it became increasingly difficult to differentiate between eligible competitions, pro competitions and plain exhibitions.

Extractions: MasterCard Skate Canada International, Day One MasterCard Skate Canada International launched on Thursday with the Pairs' and Men's Short Programs and the Compulsory Dance. Pairs, Short Program The Pairs opened Thursday's competition with the Short Program. Reigning World Champions and home crowd favorites, Jamie Sale/David Pelletier (CAN), won the first part of the competition, ahead of Russia's Tatiana Totmianina/Maxim Marinin and Qing Pang/Jian Tong of China. The Canadians had drawn to start first and they skated their playful Tango "Jalousie" with confidence, nailing each of the required elements. Their routine included an excellent triple throw loop, side by side triple toeloops and a lift with variations of position. The Judges awarded the Canadians a straight 5.8 across the board for required elements and marks ranging from 5.8 to 5.9 for presentation. "It felt really good, solid", Sale said. "It's the second performance (in competition), and it's improving. We still have some work to do. We are happy that our training is showing." She also explained that she felt more relaxed than last week at Skate America. "It was fun. At Skate America, it was fun too, but I was holding back a little." Totmianina/Marinin also put in a strong performance. Their program choreographed to a piece from the Russian Rock Opera, "Star and Death of Joaquin Murietta", featured effortless side by side triple toesloops, a triple throw loop and a one armed lift. The marks reached up to 5.7, both for required elements and for presentation. "We were more confident than at Skate America", revealed Marinin. "The atmosphere here at the rink was very good, as it always is in Canada. The crowd supported us, and that helps."

Extractions: Home Of ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Main Page Official USFSA Site Skate America International continued in Colorado Springs on Friday with the Original Dance, Men's Short Program, and Pairs Free Skating Program. Ice Dance Barbara Fusar-Poli and Maurizio Margaglio (ITA) retained their overall lead in the Dance event at Skate America, but the standings below them shuffled after the Original Dance. The Italians successfully interpreted the ballroom style in their performance to "Puttin' on the Ritz", earning all seven first-place ordinals. "Our main idea is to put the ballroom dance into the ice," said Margaglio. "That's been our project. "Fusar-Poli and Margaglio worked with the current ballroom dance world champions from Italy to create the program; Margaglio also said they watched old footage of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire to develop the atmosphere for the program. Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz (CAN), second after the Compulsory Dance, fell to third overall (fourth in the Original Dance) after Kraatz stumbled before their straight line footwork. Kraatz said that was the first time something like that had happened to them since 1994 Canadian Nationals. "I caught an edge," said Kraatz. "It was an honest mistake. I tried to recover as soon as possible."

He is considering keeping the program after the good showings at Skate Canada and Midwestern Sectionals. Todd wore the black Pity the Child costume for the short program that evening, the original Xotika costume will be replaced with a new costume eventually. During the practice session that day, Todd tried out a new costume, but the black shirt was too big and interfered with his jumps. He switched to a T-shirt halfway through the practice session. . Although he fell on the quad in the program, he did land a nice quad-double in the warm-up. It's also good to see that even though he missed the quad, he was able to put it behind him and not let it affect the remainder of the program. He went on to land the 3 Axel and the 3 Lutz.

Extractions: The inevitable finally happened. Evgeny Plushenko, the most consistent skater over two seasons of competition, finally obtained the one title that eluded him. Though he included only one quadruple jump, his famed quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop-double loop combination, he nevertheless won the free skate with unanimous ordinals to claim his first world title. Compatriot Alexei Yagudin took himself out of the running in the qualifying round, placing fifth due to foot problems. Bravely fighting through the rest of the competition with pain, Yagudin was able to match Plushenko quad-for-quad in both programs. Unfortunately for the three-time World Champion, small mistakes and hesitancies crept their way into his program, leaving him second overall.

In 2002, he won yet another Silver Medal at Canadian Nationals behind Elvis Stojko.

Ice Theatre Of New York 1999 Home Show emanuel sandhu, one of the guest skaters at the show, skated his emanuel rotates sofast in the air that I wasn Garden program they did at Fire on ice, that was http://www.frogsonice.com/skateweb/reports/ice-theatre-99.shtml
Extractions: Ice Theatre of New York 1999 Home Show Last weekend I caught the Saturday night performance of the Ice Theatre of New York's annual Home Show. I've got to say that the ITNY's shows have become a real highlight of the season for me it's such a relief to see some genuine creativity amid the relentless commercialism that skating has turned into in recent years. This year's show opened with "Magic Forest", an ensemble piece choreographed by Doug Webster to some new-age-sounding music listed in the program as being by Brian Keane. At this point I was still trying to identify everyone in the cast but I think the featured skater was Susan Pereira she carried a big pink scarf. There were 8 skaters total in this piece and they worked in various subgroups, initially as 3 pairs plus two women and later in a 3-2-2-1 grouping and then two groups of 4. Emanuel Sandhu, one of the guest skaters at the show, skated his Kamasutra short program, which I had heard about but never seen before. He opened with a triple axel/triple toe and a death drop, then fell on what I think was a triple flip, did a triple toe, circular footwork, and a spin combination with his signature "A" spin that got a lot of applause. Emanuel rotates so fast in the air that I wasn't sure if at least one of the jumps he did might have been a quad. I am also pleased to see that he is skating with a lot more speed than the last time I saw him (1998 Worlds). The next piece was an ensemble listed as "Heart", for four skaters two men and two women dressed in coordinating black outfits, choreographed by JoAnna Mendl Shaw to some music with a heavy beat. I didn't think there was a heck of a lot to the ensemble work in this number, as the four skaters mostly just skated in unison in a block formation although there were a few places where they did dance lifts as two pairs, or when one skater would break off briefly from the other three.
