Help Swooshing across a rink temporarily laid in the Brighton Centre - a place more generally associated with hosting party political conferences - the tall athletic figure on skates suddenly lifts one leg and spins round several times on the spot. He then swivels downwards on his knees as if trying to corkscrew himself through the ice, before throwing his arms wide in a theatrical flourish and flashing the megawatt smile of the professionally happy camper. At nearly 45, and despite keeping several knee surgeons in business over the years, Robin Cousins clearly can still cut it. Indeed, watching him in action, one feels the man who won the Olympic figure skating title in 1980 must keep a portrait of himself in an attic somewhere, doing his ageing for him.

Each one tells us about proud and amazing moments in their lives, things that made each experience special to them. Toller Cranston and Robin Cousins discuss what they felt was missing from their amateur careers, and how things might have been different. Many other skaters reflect upon their moments of greatness and moments that were not so great. This book gives us a sense of what it was like to be there at that moment that meant so much to each of these athletes. The chapter discussing death is both touching and heart felt. It is amazing that people are willing to let us look into their pain and heartbreak as well as their happiness and sorrow. Tracy Wilson, John Nicks, and Frank Carroll discuss the great losses in their lives. The terrible crash of 1961, which took so much of U.S. skating away from us, touched both John and Frank in different ways. This book allows us to see into the lives of those who have made us love the sport of figure skating. Skate Talk is highly recommended reading. Extractions: Oct. 16, 2002 Visit U.S. Figure Skating. Robin Wagner, U.S. Figure Skating's Coach of the Year for 2002, takes on the kids' press. Wagner coached Sarah Hughes to her improbable storybook gold medal in ladies singles at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games. How did you feel when Sarah won the gold in Salt Lake City? What was going through your mind as the ordinals went up? Amanda, 12, Clinton; Keli, 12, Great Bend ROBIN WAGNER: As many of you saw on TV, my first reaction to the final results was a joyous emotional outburst. Then I felt pride and a feeling of great accomplishment. I must admit that I also felt nervous about the future and how Sarah would handle the pressures and responsibilities of an Olympic champion. In the "kiss and cry," my one and only focus was the incredible performance Sarah had just completed and how proud of her I felt. Because she skated so early in the final group, I did not focus much on the marks or ordinals. How does it feel to be the coach of an Olympic champion? What is the next goal you and Sarah would like to achieve?
