Extractions: Home Articles Movie Reviews Booze Reviews ... About July 2002 by Steve Wilson The Olympics annoy me on many levels, but I've never fully fleshed out these feelings. Probably because if I peeled back the layers of distaste that have built up over years of exposure to commercials of obese local car dealers who paid a fee to carry the torch, melodramatic narratives dreamed up by television producers, Mary Lou Retton , confusion about whether " Flo-Jo " was a person or a toilet cleanser, young Romanian girls banging the life from their loins on unforgiving beams of wood, and a 1984 McDonald's Olympic promotion in which I failed to win anything more than a small pack of fries while my friend somehow obtained over 100 of the prize cards and lived off free Big Macs for weeks ... I'd probably like the Games. But then I couldn't gripe about them, which is more fun. In any event, I usually get sucked in anyway, especially the ice skating. Champions on Ice " was set to arrive in a few days at the local stadium and wanted to go. Neither my dad or Erin, the woman with whom I've shacked up for several years, are particular fans of the Olympics either, but as my Dad said, "If Shirley weren't along, I'd be spending my visit just sitting on your porch." Plus, she was paying.

Extractions: The internet can be a scary place for skating fans. When time is short, we need to pick and choose what websites we will visit to find out the latest information on our favorite skating stars. But which site should it be? The WebGuide is your answer. Enjoy! By Joe Erbentraut Photo Associated Press Sasha Cohen is skating's latest "it" girl. Cohen has begun the 2002-03 season like a firecracker with a start to this season not unlike the meteoric rises of Oksana Baiul (1992-93) and Michelle Kwan (1995-96), both of which began with early season wins. With her new coach Tatiana Tarasova, Cohen seems destined for greatness in the very near future. With so many websites out there on Cohen, which of them are worth paying a visit? First stop SashaCohen.com ! This is Cohen's new official website, after leaving the popular and more fan-friendly Figure Skaters Online this summer. This site has some lovely pictures but a fairly busy and overwhelming design. Although it is well updated and very thorough, this site gives off a very cold and commercial vibe. Almost as though they are trying to sell the skater instead of just giving information on her for her fans. Not much of a surprise that it is done by her new agency. Yuck. SashaFans.com
Extractions: Like a replay of last year's Olympics, Michelle was joined by fellow figure skating divas Sarah Hughes and Sasha Cohen. It has been almost a year since that event and almost as long since Olympic champion Hughes At the 2002 Nationals , she placed third behind Michelle and Sasha. Unfortunately, the evening did not go as well for Sasha Cohen who skated fourth in the final group. She fell on a jump combination towards the middle of her long program, and landed poorly on a double axel. She performed a beautiful spiral sequence, but this program wasn't as dynamic as her short program. Despite the mistakes, she managed to hang onto second placetemporarily. Her technical scores ranged from 5.5 to 5.8, and her presentation scores ranged from 5.7 to 5.8. Michelle waited backstage while the other skaters performed. She was currently in first place, but would it stay that way? Sarah was the last skater to compete at the event. She completed five triple jumps and her error-free program was worthy of the title. Hughes smiled after she completed her last triple jump, obviously very pleased with her performance. The judges rewarded her program with technical scores from 5.7 to 5.8 and presentation scores from 5.6 to 5.9. Hughes' scores were not as high as Kwan's, but she was able to move up to second place this year.
Extractions: J. Barry Mittan Art of Figure Skating Calender After skating her short program on Tuesday night, Michelle Kwan was in the lead by a narrow margin of 5-4 over Irina Slutskaya of Russia. Sasha Cohen, in her first Olympic appearance, was confident and took command of the ice during her short program. The competition was tough, as judges were closely watching for errors and taking each required deduction. Hughes, who seemed a little tense during the competition Tuesday night, made an error during a triple lutz jump and placed fourth behind Cohen. The tenseness, at least on Hughes' part, disappeared on Thursday night. In a stunning turn of events, Sarah Hughes came from behind to grab the gold, following mistakes by Cohen, Slutskaya, and Kwan in their long programs. Sarah was the second skater in the final group of six. She completed two triple-triple jump combos, the first American woman to do so in competition. After a standing ovation, Sarah skated off the ice and waited for her scores, then headed backstage to wait the results of the other skaters.

Extractions: SALT LAKE CITY Even Michelle Kwan, sentimental gem that she is, has played the political games inherent to her sport. Associated Press Sasha Cohen of the United States may have surprised the favorites Tuesday night with crisper, faster and higher jumps. Sure, why not? It's what has worked golden wonders since Sonja Henie. And so with her beauty, elegance and talent sparkling as much as ever Tuesday, Kwan fulfilled half the goal. In front of judges with whom Kwan is on a first-name basis, she finally did what at least a 46-share of network viewers was hoping she would do. Four years removed from a silver-medal effort in Nagano four long years of sticking to it for the sake of taking one more step up the podium Kwan wowed the world. But was she the best Olympic athlete on the ice, really? I like the other American, Sasha Cohen. Sassy Sasha.
