Extractions: Fedor Andreev, Canada I saw Fedor Andreev for the first time when I received "Celebration of a Life - A Tribute to Sergei Grinkov" on tape. Fedor was just 13 years old back then. But what an impressive debut did he make. It was his first time out there on the ice in font of a 'big' crowd, during one of the most emotional skating shows ever, and he skated a flawless program to a piano piece by Scriabian (his Novice level SP). It must have been an incredible experience for him: skating with the sports biggest names (like Kurt Browning, Scott Hamilton, Viktor Petrenko etc.), honouring his great friend Sergei Grinkov. I definitely wanted to see his skating. Especially after I had heard other people raving about his artistry. In 2000, I got hold of a tape with 2000 Canadian Nationals. His SP wasn't too impressive as he had problems with his jumps and placed only 9th. But his LP was outstanding. He nailed every jump and it was simply amazing to watch him perform. Not just because of the jumps but due to the other aspects of his skating: the spins, his posture and, especially, his graceful arm movements. I don't think there is right now any other skater who is able to interpret classical music like Fedor does. Every movement of his body fits the music perfectly. He has such a great musicality which makes everything look so easy. No wonder, he brought the house down with his LP at these Canadian Nationals.

Extractions: Marina Zueva Marina Zueva was an ice dancer who competed for the Soviet Union with Andrei Vitman in the late 1970's. Shortly thereafter, she retired from competitive skating to become a choreographer. Creating a routine for Gordeeva and Grinkov was her "final project" to receive a choreography degree at the National Theatre Institute in 1982. Through the 1980's, Zueva continued to be the principle choreographer for G&G. In 1990, the trio went their separate ways when Gordeeva and Grinkov turned professional and Marina took a job in Canada. Marina now coaches at the Minto Skating Club in Ottawa, Ontario with her husband, Aleksei Tchetveroukhine. Her most promising student is her son, Fedor Andreev. She has also worked with Canadian pair Kristy and Kris Wirtz and many other top eligible Canadian skaters. In addition to choreographing Katia's professional routines, she has also worked with other professional skaters including Caryn Kadavy, and pair Radka Kovarikova and Rene Novotny. Extractions: Like a nomad, the Club moved from arena to arena as the membership grew and ice needs changed. It all started at Dixie Arena Gardens in 1949 and since then, skaters have been coached at the Valleys, Chic Murray, Tomken and Iceland Arenas In 1950, the Club had two coaches and grew steadily until today it boasts 15 coaches as well as part-time and synchronized skating coaches. The very first Ice Show was held in the Spring of 1951 and was called Ice Capers. It was a phenomenal success and played to sold out crowds. Based on its initial popularity, Ice Shows were presented every year until the number of skaters grew to the point where the combined time, effort and cost became prohibitive and the frequency of shows was reduced to every other year. Throughout all this time, the Club's Ice Shows garnered a reputation for intricately detailed and colourful costumes, wonderful sets, popular and lively music and immensely entertaining choreographed numbers.
