While some of the seeded Skaters entered at the Cup of Russia have already qualified for the Final, to be held next February in Tokyo, Japan, others are just now entering the Grand Prix. European champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia and World bronze medalist, Michael Weiss (USA), head the list of the Men's event. They can expect strong competition from Alexander Abt (RUS) and 1999 World Junior Champion Ilia Klimkin (RUS). Not to be counted out either from the field is Matthew Savoie of the USA, who captured the bronze medal at Skate Canada two weeks ago and who is hoping for another medal. Weiss, who was forced to withdraw from Skate America due to a stress fracture in his foot, is entering his first Grand Prix event of the season. Plushenko, who took gold at the Sparkassen Cup, will also be competing for points here, which is his first scoring event. Of the top three skaters in the short program, Honda skated in the first warm-up (the weaker of the two) and Yagudin and Eldredge were in the second. Honda began his program with quad toe loop - triple toe loop, landing the quad but stepping out of the triple. He also landed a solo triple Axel but stepped out of a triple flutz. He skated to "Don Quixote" in a program choreographed by Lori Nichol. It was a lively presentation and received good second marks, though it did not really capture the spirit of the music. Despite the two errors on his jumps he claimed seven of nine third place ordinals with one judge placing Canadian Ben Ferreira third and another American Matt Savoie. Savoie had a decent skate giving a nice performance with good speed. He started with a successful triple Axel but in the subsequent combination he popped the second jump ending up with a triple flip - single too loop. Later in the program he landed a solo triple Lutz.

Extractions: (Includes Final Standings) Official Site Pairs Aljona Savchenko and Stanislav Morozov (UKR) took on a thrilling duel contending for first place against Julia Shapiro and Alexey Sokolov (RUS). After the Short Program, the Russians occupied the first position, but in the Free Program, they made several mistakes. Sokolov touched down on the ice on the double axel, positioning the Russians in second. The Ukrainian Pair skated a very clean program, which brought them the victory in the Free Program as well as the gold medal. Their program contained very impressive side by side triple toe, double axel-double toe, triple throw toeloop and many other difficult elements. The other Russian pair Victoria Shliakova and Grigory Petrovsky, who were in third place after the Short Program, kept this position after the Free Program. The couple skated a clean double throw salchow, a side by side triple salchow and a double axle-double toeloop. Ladies Svetlana Bukareva (RUS) skated a very clean Short Program and won the first part of the competition. Unable to hold the pressure in the Free Program the Russian touched down on the ice while performing the triple flip, triple toe and double axel, placing her in third. Deanna Stalleto (USA), third after the Short Program, was able to take this advantage. Stalleto skated a strong Free Program, as she landed clean jumps including a triple lutz-double toe, a triple flip, a double axel-double axel, a triple toe-double toe, a triple lutz and a triple salchow, which won her the gold. Her teammate, Jennifer Kirk, who also accomplished an impressive Free Program, took second place. Kirk placed three high triples and had a very good triple toe-double toe, but missed the double axel in the combination with the triple salchow.

Extractions: NOW Mexico Ushers In a New Era by Laurie Nealin Ricardo Olivarrieta concedes it hasn't been easy being a figure skater in Mexico the past 14 years. Kind of like being on the Jamaican bobsled team? "Yes," he agrees, smiling broadly as he considers the analogy. "With one exception. I never ended upside down on the track," Mexico's most experienced skater says. "I always had the minimum requirements." After 10 years on top, Olivarietta, now 27, lost his national title to Monterrey's David del Pozo, 22, last November. Still, Olivarietta, who holds a degree in international relations and spent the fall and winter studying in Canada and the United States, is one of the driving forces behind a concerted effort to raise the standard and profile of figure skating in his country. With ice rinks in only eight cities and a skating federation membership of just 1,100 athletes in a country of 85 million people, Olivarrieta says, the Mexican public sees ice skating more as a "novelty" than serious sport. Ten years from now, however, he hopes it will be a different story. Last September, Mexico took its first big step toward rewriting that story, when the country hosted its first major international event since the Mexican Federation of Ice Sports was founded in 1986.

2001 Boston Open and his footwork and inbetween skating involved far in this event, and unhappy skatersleaving the ice. The senior man was fedor andreev, who started out on http://www.frogsonice.com/skateweb/reports/2001-boston-open.shtml
Extractions: 2001 Boston Open Thursday Yes, the Boston Open is going on as planned this weekend, with the novice ladies short programs being held tonight. There were very few spectators at the rink as no doubt many people were preoccupied with thoughts of the recent terrorist attacks, but personally I found it refreshing to get away from the constant stream of bad news for a while. They had the novices skating in 4 groups with 4-6 skaters in each group (there had originally been more entered, but there were the usual number of scratches). I didn't take detailed notes on anybody, but here are a few highlights. Erica Archambault easily won the first group, doing a triple salchow with a wild landing and steps into a double toe, and her usual assortment of bendy spins. She did only a single axel, but nobody else in this flight was able to successfully land a double. Carly Milden won the second group with a double lutz/double toe combination and probably slightly cheated double axel. Chynna Pope also landed a double axel that looked a bit underrotated, but she got too close to the boards on her combination and popped it into just a single lutz. Otherwise I would definitely have had her ahead of Carly on the basis of her superior speed and ice coverage. Sarah Farley was the class of the third group she fell on her triple salchow attempt, but landed an incredibly high and springy double axel.
