5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recomend for all hockey fans
I got many books about HHL history, but for my recent trivia contest used only this one, because Liam cover nearly all interesting facts about NHL. I also read this book just because it's interesting, with very good language and attitude to the facts. The very interesting part in this book is his attention to the 1972 series between Canada and Russia, because for me a Russian guy it's important to know what is other side think about this. So if you want to have very rare and complete knowlege about NHL please read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jam packed with information and photos
This book is great! It has information about the NHL and hockey dating back into the 1800s, such as who won the Stanley Cup each year from when it was first introduced to the 2000 season, as well as photos, season highlights, articles, and facts for each season.

By reading this book you'll learn information about the different professional leagues that led to the formation of the NHL, and well as the first ever official hockey game, where the first pro hockey league was located, and which teams and star players were involved. It also includes a table of teams containing all of the teams, which city they've played in, they're old and new names, and the years as each franchise.

Bobby Orr's foreword is also interesting, as it gives his view on hockey and his career.

I would strongly recommend this book to any hockey fan! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put: one of the great books about hockey!
Only Ken Dryden's "The Game" rivals this one, in my mind, for hockey writing excellence.Though, at only 42, I am too young to remember seeing the greatest defenseman ever play the game, I do recall his retirement ceremony at the old Boston Garden, when grown men cried at the sight of Bobby Orr in a suit instead of on skates.

Just as Bill Russell is a Boston legend I never had the opportunity to see perform, Bobby Orr will forever live in my memory as the thoughtful and highly intelligent, youngish looking man who is deloved by New Englanders for all he had done.

Highly recommended for all sports fans!

1-0 out of 5 stars An Injustice To The Best
Most of the information in this book isand has been published before. Bobby Orr did not support the writing of this book. His life as the greatest hockey player in history is not depicted by this author.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Gamble
Growing up on the South Shore of Boston in the 1970s as I did, I was whirled into the Bobby Orr-driven hockey mania that swept the region. I was born in 1971, between the two Bruins' Stanley Cup championships and before I knew it I was on skates in many of the new rinks that were built simply because of the excitement Orr brought to the area for the sport of hockey.

Brunt's treatment of Orr is thoughtful, if somewhat hyperbolic. But then, this is Bobby Orr of whom we are speaking. His name is up there with Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux. He stood above all in his time. The defenseman's undeniable place in hockey history when matched with the author's borderline grandiose style inevitably leads to overstatement.

The gamble that the author took, though, is what makes the book interesting. It does not have the Orr stamp of approval. Number Four met with the author and discussed the project, ultimately distancing himself from it, and asking the author to avoid direct contact with his family. By following through with the book, Brunt seemingly gambled away his chance at future work with Orr. Was a bridge burned?

For hockey fans, from Parry Sound to Oshawa to Boston, the book brings back memories of players long gone, of the rock 'em, sock 'em style of the 1970s and the exponential growth of the sport from the original six to regular global interaction. If there is a major drawback, it's that the machinations of Orr's longtime agent Alan Eagleson are not thoroughly and definitively spelled out. Hints are dropped and the 1998 trial is covered, but just how deeply he scarred the players of the National Hockey League is understated. After reading the book, I guess I'll be going elsewhere for more details.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Canadian Gentleman
Being brought up in Detroit I knew of Hockey but that was it. I went to a few games as a child with Grandpa but everyone jumped up and I couldn't see anything. Now retired and with a wife that was a hockey fan I decided a few years ago to try watching the game. Low and behold a instant fan. This book did more for me that anything else in explaining the game and the names I had heard but really did not know. The sad side is like so many sports and jobs the management or agents or lawyers use and abuse their help. I enjoyed the book and it has certainly brought my knowledge of the sport and the game up. Go Red Wings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read
If you like Hockey and grew up during the time of the legend Bobby Orr playing against the Canadians, the Maple Leafs, the Blackhawks and others this book is well worth the read. I enjoyed the book and will pass it on to others to enjoy as well. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 13 Bucks for a 48 Page Book About One Goal
Plenty of better books out there about Bobby Orr and the Goal. And you'll get a lot more content in those than you will in this glorified essay/news story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Short, But Enjoyable Book About Bobby Orr - The Greatest of ALL TIME
Bobby Orr was the greatest hockey player of all time. I was a little young to see him play during his career (I only had a chance to see a few games towards the end of his career after his knees had failed him) but I've had a chance to see hours of footage from dozens of games in his prime, and I can confidently assert that there was no one as good as he was, ever.

I will certainly grant that Gretzky had the greatest career of all time, putting together great skill and consistent performance for many years. I might even grant that someone like Mario Lemieux may have been endowed with a higher level of innate ability to play hockey. But by the standard of how much impact a player is able to have on a game, how much they are able to dominate the action, and do it all both ways at high speed, no one touches Orr.

Perhaps you've seen adult amateur league games where some team will bring in a ringer, a guy who's played college or major junior hockey, who so clearly outplays everyone on the ice that people start getting angry? People resent someone so dominant, and do all they can to contain them, ususally ineffectively. Here's the connection: Bobby Orr was like a ringer in the NHL. It is not hype - take the time to watch some game footage (beyond just highlights, because though Orr has astounding highlights, they don't tell the whole story) and you will become a believer.

This book is brief, and thin on content, but the quotes and images contained within tell a lot about how respected and admired Orr was (and is) by teammates, opponents, coaches, and writers. I'd give the book a higher rating if it was more substantial, but what is there is good, and a worthy aquisition for hockey fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Boston Hockey Moment-Best Hockey Player...ever!!!
"The Goal" is a great book that brings back the memories and magic that culminated in one of hockey's greatest moments. Some would argue that this is the greatest moment ever in the sport. Orr's miracle season created a new era in hockey. Bobby Orr ran the defense and the offense for the Boston Bruins. Harry Sinden recalls some wonderful inside details in this polaroid style flashback. What makes this book special are all the quotes by other players who were in awe of Orr. Bobby not only made for one of the greatest pictures in sports, he also electrified and transformed a city. Orr dominated both ends of the ice, and he could body check, fight and get very emotional. Gretzky was a great stat accumulator and an excellent passer and puck handler. I would say that Bobby Orr could pass, skate and check equal to or better than Wayne Gretzky. Orr's slapshot was harder. His body took a pounding, whereas nobody laid a finger on the great one. Bobby would often block shots (sans helmet) and then break up ice to either set goals up or score them himself. Gretzky was rarely found playing any kind of defense. Winner, Orr. This book will further solidify the legend, and make the memories, stories and smiles all as fresh as when it all happened. Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of the greatest goal in hockey. It's safe to say it won't happen like that ever again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cool
A must have for any Bobby Orr or Boston Bruins fan. The greatest goal by the greatest hockey player ever.
Anyone saying "what's his name" is a better hockey player is too young to have seen Orr play. Statistics aren't everything - they are secondary to actual on the ice ability. Yeah, the G man was great. But Orr was in a league of his own. I guarantee you if there were two teams, one made up of six Bobby's and one made up of six Gretsky's, Gretsky would never touch the puck.
Never again will you see a player that good. Never. ... Read more
