Extractions: In the great history of hockey, there are some records that may never be broken. Chicago Wolves goaltender Wendell Young holds such a mark. The 35-year-old netminder is the only player in hockey history to win championships in the Ontario, International, American and National Hockey Leagues. Young completed the four-cup performance last season when the Wolves won their first Turner Cup by beating Detroit in seven games. "Ive been fortunate to be on some championship teams," said Young, who also won titles with Kitchener in 1982, Hershey in 1988 and in Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992. Young said the Hockey Hall of Fame will be setting up a picture with him and the four trophies the Memorial, Calder, Turner and Stanley Cups. Back in Chicago, Young seems to be basking in the glory of his distinct record. "He tells me about winning those championships every day," Wolves head coach John Anderson said. "Its a tremendous accomplishment, and he knows what it takes to win." Young has been the Wolves main goaltender since their inception in 1994. Young holds nearly every goaltending record for Chicago, including most wins, most saves, most shutouts and best GAA in a season.

Extractions: By LIZ ROBBINS LAKE PLACID, N.Y., Aug. 17 The puck ricocheted like a bullet into the bench and struck Julie Chu on the hip as she was leaning intently over the boards. She did not flinch. Instead, insulated by pads and a poise rare for a rookie, Chu turned to her teammates and laughed for a good 20 seconds. Since that first intrasquad game last week during the tryouts for the United States women's Olympic hockey team, she has embraced every experience, appreciating moments that ease the tension gripping her lifelong dream. Granted, that dream is relatively recent for the 19-year-old Chu and her two extraordinary teenage teammates, Krissy Wendell and Natalie Darwitz. It is far from the dream Chu's grandmother, Lai Fong, had 34 years ago when she arrived in New York City from Hong Kong, a single mother with three children.Chu, learning the stories of her grandmother's sacrifices, does not forsake her opportunity. "It's an Olympic year, so there are no guarantees," Chu said, echoing her grandmother's lesson. "You just have to grit it out." When the tryouts in Lake Placid conclude on Wednesday, Chu, Wendell, 19, and Darwitz, 17, all forwards, are virtually guaranteed to make the 25-player roster in preparation forthe Salt Lake City Games.

Only this time, the women actually had to break a sweat. In a game that kept their attention for the entire 60 minutes, the U.S. women shut out Finland 5-0 Saturday to secure the top seed in the medal round. In victories over Germany, China and Finland, Team USA has outscored its opponents 27-1. The U.S. has never lost an international game to any team other than Canada. The Americans got their second hat trick in as many games. Natalie Darwitz, 18, scored three goals, including one shorthanded, to ignite the U.S. to the victory over Finland, the bronze medal winner in 1998 at Nagano, Japan.
