This week any questions may have been answered, thanks to the work of VP and General Manager Craig Button. It was common knowledge that sooner or later the Flames would have to deal away defenceman Derek Morris and his $2.6-million (US) contract. It was also common belief that Calgary would lose on whatever trade finally shipped Morris out. But this is where Button fooled all of us so-called experts. Button's deal with the Colorado Avalanche suprised most people on a number of levels. First, he traded within his own conference and division. Early rumours had Morris on his way to Boston; others were betting on the Rangers. Finally, during training camp in Banff, there was word the Toronto Maple Leafs were interested. So it was generally accepted Morris would go to the east. But Button was thinking differently: Conference games be damned, he was going to make the best deal he could to help his hockey club. Gutsy, especially compared with the conventional thinking of most hockey people.

Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Dec. 30 - It was certainly a tough task deciding upon a No. 1 star from the Colorado Avalanche in its 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. Just about everyone on the Avs played well, so much so there could have been a dozen angry players who would have been justified storming the Pepsi can-filled press box demanding to know why they were passed over. No wonder, then, the one with all the star power chose L.A.'s Luc Robitaille as the night's No. 1 constellation. It was probably easier that way. But Robitaille's two goals aside, the Avs were the real stars at the Pepsi Center, putting on one of their better performances of the season in the team's second straight victory. Colorado got goals from four players and could have easily scored a half dozen more. Meanwhile, the Avs put on a penalty-killing clinic in subduing the team that had bounced them twice before this season. The Avs can now go safely into the year 2000 with a winning record, and the savory thought of many more home games coming up.

Extractions: It's been a disappointing season indeed for the Flames and General Manager Craig Button. Last season filled Button and the fans with hope that the team could build on their early-season success from 2001-2002 and put together a more complete effort this year. After getting a great training camp out of prospect Jordan Leopold, Button pulled the trigger on a blockbuster deal, sending #1 defenseman Derek Morris, Jeff Shantz and Dean McAmmond to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for clutch scorer Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle. Things started off well this year, with new acquisition Drury getting off to a great start on the top line with Jarome Iginla and Craig Conroy. In fact, Drury was amongst the league's leading scorers for the season's first couple of weeks. Unfortunately, it was not to last, and the top line quickly lapsed into a slump that it's still struggling to escape.

Extractions: It was only a matter of time before Hollywood hopped on the hockey bandwagon! Kevin Costner is directing a movie for Universal Pictures about our favorite team, the Colorado Avalanche, and the path to their Stanley Cup win. Judging from the title, the story will center around Ray Bourque, but early press says that it will focus on the whole team. This could be really cool if Costner does it right. It's supposedly going to be filmed on location here in Denver, Colorado.
