Extractions: of the Journal Star PEORIA - Chris Wells got something he could hang on to for the rest of his career when he spent his rookie pro season as an NHLer with Pittsburgh and the great Mario Lemieux. It was a puck, from Wells' first NHL point. And it was Lemieux who presented it to him. It was Jan. 5, 1996 in Pittsburgh. The Detroit Red Wings were visiting, and Wells, a touted first-round pick (24th overall) by Pittsburgh in 1994 who spent three games in the minors and went right to a 54-game rookie stint with the Penguins, was skating with the superstar. The puck was poke-checked from Lemieux and slid back to Wells as play hit the Detroit zone two-on-two. Wells partly fanned on a shot and the puck slid back toward Lemieux, right between his skates. He gathered it in and split the defense to score. "And then Mario reached into the net and fished the puck out for me and gave it to me," said Wells, 26. "It was amazing, being around Lemieux. He was a quiet guy, but led the league easily in points and I remember one game where he got four goals, three assists and could have had 14 points on the night. You can't teach the skill he has."
