Extractions: Tony Twist, formerly of the St. Louis Blues Snacks reader Allison Gosejohan nominated former St. Louis enforcer Tony Twist for our latest Golden Finger. As most NHL fans know, this summer the popular Blues player suffered a motorcycle accident which may have ended his hockey career and nearly took his life as well. At the time Tony had just learned he was no longer with the St. Louis team. When a car failed to yield and struck his cycle, he miraculously saved himself by vaulting over his handlebars, over the car and onto his feet some 40 feet away. "But I didn't stick the landing," said Tony. "I fell to the left when my pelvis broke. The Swedish judge only gave me a 9.8, but the U.S. and Canadian judges both gave me a 10.0." Certainly out for the season, Twister's comeback prospects are grim. He would be the world's only enforcer with a plate binding his pelvis and two rebuilt knee ligaments. This did not prevent him, only two weeks after the accident, from attending the third annual Tony Twist Golf Invitational, which helps the St. Louis Society for physically and mentally challenged youngsters. Twist, on crutches, supervised the sold-out event. Wearing a No Crybabies ball cap, he declared, "Hey, I was real lucky. I could be dead or paralyzed. God didn't want me, and the devil wasn't looking." The event raised approximately $65,000 for the St. Louis Society.
Extractions: Loses $24 million to real-life Tony Twist A jury in St. Louis awarded Tony Twist, a former hockey star, $24.5 million dollars in damages for using his name in Todd McFarlane's, Spawn, without permission. Todd (who has been fighting the case for 2 years), Erik Larsen, and most of the Image stable are outraged, and are screaming 1st Amendment violations to anyone who will listen. Even the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is worried about the case, its implications, and its affect on the industry. But don't worry. This won't affect the industry. It just so happens that in this case, the law was fair, and justice was done. After all, it wasn't as though the real-life Tony Twist didn't have a legal leg to stand on. Granted, the mere coincidence of having the same name would never stand up in court, but Todd admitted he used the real-life Tony Twist as inspiration not once but TWICE. One admission was in Wizard Spawn Special and the other was in a letters column from Spawn #20 (since Spawn #20 was published first, Wizard was released from the lawsuit). For those who don't have either publication, the Wizard Spawn Special read: "Tony Twist. Real-life Persona: Tony Twist. Relation: NHL St. Louis Blues right winger. The Mafia don that has made life exceedingly rough for Al Simmons and his loved ones, in addition to putting out an ill-advised contract on the Violator, is named for former Quebec Nordiques hockey player Tony Twist, now a renowned enforcer (i.e., 'goon') for the National Hockey League."

The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday heard arguments on Twist's claim that the unauthorized use of his name in the "Spawn" comic book series hurt his image and cost him endorsements and other business. Three years ago, a St. Louis jury awarded Twist $24.5 million in his case against "Spawn" creator Todd McFarlane and other defendants. The trial judge later threw out the award, leading to Twist's appeal. Twist's 10-year National Hockey League career ended when his contract with the St. Louis Blues expired in June 1999. He had been one of the NHL's best-known enforcers, ready to fight to protect teammates against opponents' assaults. McFarlane, a hockey fan, has acknowledged naming the character Antonio "Tony Twist" Twistelli for the hockey player, who was with the NHL's Quebec Nordiques when the brutal Mafia killer was introduced in the "Spawn" series in November 1993.

NHL Enforcers -- Tony Twist They know that hockey STARS magazine got it right, when it ratedTony twist as the NHL's toughest, meanest, and most feared man. http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Arena/1893/Enforcers.html
Extractions: The NHL has its variety of players, each with his own job. Some are goal scorers, outstanding play-makers, offensive-defensemen, defensive-forwards, stand-up and stay-at-home defensemen, angel-wing goaltenders, position netminders, and so on...but there is one job that can lead to the destruction of certain players, whether it is the player himself, or the players with whom they come in contact. The Enforcer (a.k.a. - Goons, fighters, compellers, warriors, man-at-arms, tough guys, the list goes on...) has his own jobs. His jobs consist of making sure the opposing team plays fair, keeps them in line, protects valuable assets to the team, or even to just spark a fire under his own teams "bench". Whatever the case may be, his job is also crucial to the success of a hockey club. Most importantly, these men are out there for the team they represent, and the fans that "come to a fight and see a hockey game break out." (Rodney Dangerfield) But rarely go noticed as an aspect that sells tickets, or leads to the prosperity of an organization. And they do it, in most cases, for the league minimum paycheck, least recognition, and little pride.
