IFK had also Christian Ruuttu, then playing for Chicago Blackhawks, now back in Finland, while Jokerit had Teemu Selänne, the Finnish Flash of Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and Jari Kurri, Finlands Mr. Hockey. IIHF - NEWS become the first players in 22 years to win the Olympic hockey gold and Finns JariKurri and esa tikkanen hold the European record of five Stanley Cup wins http://www.iihf.com/news/iihfpr3002.htm
Extractions: For the first time - Euro goalies to duel in Stanley Cup finals Unless unexpected things happen, a European born and trained goaltender will lead his team to a Stanley Cup victory for the first time in 109 years. Since the Sheffield, England crafted Stanley Cup trophy was awarded for the first time in 1893, no European goaltender has ever lead his team to a Stanley Cup final victory. Two European born and trained goaltenders have had their names engraved on the silver chalice: Czech Roman Turek of the Dallas Stars in 1999 and Swiss David Aebischer last season with the Colorado Avalanche. Both were back-up goaltenders. Turek did not see any playoff action in 1999 behind Ed Belfour while Aebischer recorded one minute of play as Patrick Roy's stand in. If Detroit wins the best-of-seven finals, Steve Yzerman and Brenden Shanahan will become the first players in 22 years to win the Olympic hockey gold and the Stanley Cup in the same season. Defenseman Ken Morrow (of Team USA and New York Islanders from 1980) is still the only one to have accomplished that feat.
IIHF - NEWS Ken Morrow to win the Stanley Cup and the Olympic hockey tournament in Oilers JariKurri (FIN), Willy Lindstrom (SWE), Jaroslav Pouzar (TCH), esa tikkanen (FIN http://www.iihf.com/news/iihfpr3402.htm
Extractions: It was a great success not only for the entire Red Wing organisation but also for the big European contingent on the Detroit team. For the first time ever 11 Europeans were part of a Stanley Cup winning roster. Russians Pavel Datsyuk, Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov, Swedes Fredrik Olausson, Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom, Czechs Dominik Hasek, Jiri Fischer, Ladislav Kohn and Jiri Slegr and German Uwe Krupp. Canadians Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman became the second and third players after Ken Morrow to win the Stanley Cup and the Olympic hockey tournament in the same season. Morrow was a member of the 1980 USA gold winning team at Lake Placid and of the New York Islanders who the Stanley Cup the same year.

The biggest signing was, of course, Curtis Joseph signing with Toronto. We will not be discussing this. Why? Well, let us ask you this. Do you believe the signing of CuJo thrusts the Leafs into the thick of the Stanley Cup chase? If you do, go read the hate mail page, then come back. We'll be discussing the signings that have an impact on the real Cup Contenders: Buffalo, Colorado, Dallas, Detroit, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington. St. Louis would have been on this list, but the first analysis will indicate why they aren't. Brett Hull - The Golden Brett throws everyone a curve and inks a contract in the Lone Star State. Why? Because he is missing only one honor in his career, and that is the Stanley Cup. He's won the Hart Trophy as the MVP, he's been in the All-Star Game, he played in the Finals in 1986 (Yes, he's that old), but never has he won the Cup. Brett found a team that was a serious contender and needing a finisher. It's a terrific match. Dallas once again goes into the season as a favorite to win it all. It also impacts St. Louis dramatically, as they now have to find someone to bring them an extra 35-40 goals. You heard it here first, the Blues will not lead the league in goals in 1998-99. There is no truth to the rumor, however, that Brett also received the Twin Forks Ranch as part of the deal, although he is in negotiations with Victoria Principal for...

Extractions: A good one from Geo's son-in-law... Two guys from Vancouver die and wake up in Hell. The next day the devil stops in to check on them and sees them dressed in parkas, mittens and toques warming themselves around the fire. The devil asks them, "What are you doing? Isn't it hot enough for you?" The two guys reply, "Well, you know, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh." The devil decides that these two aren't miserable enough and turns up the heat. The next morning he stops in again and there they are, still dressed in parkas, toques and mittens. The devil asks them again, "It's awfully hot down here, can't you guys feel it?" Again the two guys reply, "Well, like we told ya yesterday, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh." This gets the devil a little steamed up and he decides to fix these two guys. He cranks the heat up as high as it will go. The damned are wailing and screaming everywhere. He stops by the room with the two guys from Canada and finds them in light jackets and bucket hats, grilling sausage and drinking beer. The devil is astonished. "Everyone down here is in abject misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves." The two Canadians reply, "Well, ya know, we don't get too much warm weather up there in Vancouver so we've just got to have a cook-out when the weather's THIS nice."
