Extractions: Dec. 18, 2002, 12:02PM Associated Press Hockeytown welcomed the Stanley Cup back for the third time in six years, then had to say goodbye to Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman and goalie Dominik Hasek. The Detroit Red Wings became champions again when they beat the surprise Carolina Hurricanes in the finals before losing Bowman and Hasek to retirement. Detroit's return to glory highlighted a year that was darkened by the death of a teenage girl in Columbus, Ohio, the first spectator to die from injuries sustained at an NHL game. Brittanie Cecil died March 18, two days after she was struck by a puck shot by Blue Jackets center Espen Knutsen. Cecil would've turned 14 two days after she died. She attended the game with her father, who bought the tickets for her as an early birthday present.

Extractions: The World Championships, much like the Olympics, soon became a frustrating experience for Canadians; because of the rules, they were again unable to send their top players. Once again, the same double standard allowed the European nations to send their pros while Canada was forbidden to do the same. The Canadians were scheduled to host the 1970 World Championships at two venues, Montreal and Winnipeg. Canadian hockey officials lobbied the International Ice Hockey Federation to make the 1970 tournament an open one, allowing professional players to play for the first time. The IIHF agreed to allow nine non-NHL pros to take part in each sanctioned tournament, which included the World Championships in 1970. After the Canadians, with five pros on their roster, finished a close second at the 1969 Izvestia Tournament in Russia, the IIHF suddenly changed the plan and forbade professional players from participating without forfeiting the Amateur status of the rest of Team Canada. Angered by this decision, Hockey Canada, the nation's newly formed hockey federation withdrew Canada from all international competition. This meant the IIHF had to scramble to find a new host for the 1970 tournament and found itself operating international tournaments that no longer included the world's premier hockey nation. Seven years would pass and a new IIHF president would take power before the rift could be resolved. Hockey Canada organized a truly international tournament, the Canada Cup, to pit the best of each nation against one another. The IIHF sanctioned this new tournament in exchange for Canadians, with their pros being allowed to play, returning to the World's. The tournament was held during the NHL playoffs, however, so it could only feature the best of Canada's professionals who were not competing for the Stanley Cup.

Account Info Hockey Late Goal Lifts Thrashers 4-3 Associated Press Marc Savard scored his second goal of the game with 1:36 left in the third period to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. With Mike Ribeiro in the penalty box for hooking, Savard made a centering pass that went in off Canadiens defenseman Stephane Quintal's left skate at 18:24. It was his ninth goal of the season. Brad Tapper and Jeff Cowan also scored for the Thrashers, who improved to 6-2-1-0 under coach Bob Hartley. Thrashers defenseman Andy Sutton took four minor penalties in the game, but none of them cost his team as Montreal went 0-for-6 on the power play. Andreas Dackell, Jan Bulis and Niklas Sundstrom scored for Montreal, which is 3-2-2-1 under new coach Claude Julien and has lost its last two. Sundstrom's goal was his fifth of the season and third in five games since being acquired from San Jose in a deal that also included Jeff Hackett and Kyle McLaren. With Atlanta ahead 3-2 in the third, Joe Juneau got the puck behind the net and fed Sundstrom for a one-timer that beat Pasi Nurminen high to the glove side.

Extractions: HOME STORM PENGUINS IMAGES ... Contact Me Hockey Figures - NHL Series 1 (Series 3) While having a quick surf of the net the other day I came across the McFarlane Toys 2001 Online Catalogue and the pictures for the next series of their excellent NHLPA licensed hockey figures. Click on the images above this article to take a look at the latest additions to the range. The suggestion I made in my review of Series 1 and 2 (read this here ) have, by chance no doubt, been taken up by McFarlane Toys insofar as Stanley Cup winning netminder Ed Belfour has been added to the series. Instead of replacing Jose Theodore as the 2nd netminder in the range he has replaced Dallas team-mate Mike Modano from the line-up previously advertised. With this change, McFarlane have split the range half and half with netminders and skaters (series 1 and 2 only had 2 netminders in each) - this is probably in recognition of the fact that the netminder figures are the better sellers in the range - and are, in my opinion, the stronger overall figures in the range!! Ill be looking forward to getting hold of these once they are available!
