Extractions: October 21, 2002 - Well, I'm checking in from Toronto with my first journal entry of the season. We're winding down a long road trip tonight against the Maple Leafs, and hopefully we'll come out with a win. I'd say that tonight I'm definitely looking for a hat trick, especially if I'm going to catch the 41 goals Billy Guerin scored last year. If I'm going to catch up, I'm going to have to get to work soon. But seriously, we're looking forward to ending this trip on a good note. There's no better way to cap off a road trip than with a win, and especially against Toronto. I guess I'll start off my first journal giving you a little bit of my personal background. I grew up in an area of Montreal called Dollard-des-Ormeaux, which is also known as the West Island of Montreal. That part of Montreal is more English speaking, and all of my friends were English-speaking. My mom is perfectly bi-lingual, and we learned French in school, but if you're not in that environment you don't really learn it that well. My family includes my father Phil, my mother Cathy, my older sister Jill who is 28 and my younger brother Dean who is 25. Jill is engaged to a guy named Timmy and Dean to a girl named Paula, and both weddings will be next summer, so that's going to be a busy one. My wife, Jean Marie, is from New York. I met her my first year in New York on a blind date, when I was playing for the Rangers. We had our first child, a son named Tyson Dean (we gave him the middle name Dean after my brother), this past July 7th, which also happened to be our one-year wedding anniversary. We also have one other member of our family an American Bulldog named Jolie.
Extractions: January 31, 2003 - Well, Im pretty late here in writing my journal entry, and I have to apologize for not getting back to you guys a little earlier. Actually, I have no excuse, but weve got a couple of things to talk about so lets get rolling. I hope everyone has been doing well and hopping back on the Bruins bandwagon, since the team is starting to do a little bit better. Weve got a couple of wins lately, and a lot of that has to do with two of our boys - Joe [Thornton] and Glen [Murray]. We have to wish the both of them good luck as they head out the All-Star Game in Florida this weekend. This is Joes second one and Glens first one, and I have to say that Glens a little nervous. I guess the guys dont wear their helmets for the competitions they have to do and Glens really worried about his hair and stuff and how hes going to look and everything. Hes not worried about how hes going to play, he worried about his hair-do. To celebrate Joe and Glen making the All-Star Team, the whole Bruins squad was going to take them out to dinner one night, but I think the two of them got a bit of a bonus for making the team because they ended up taking us out to dinner! I think we were in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago when it happened, and we had a great time. We should have taken them out, but it worked the other way around.

Extractions: P.J. Stock Down 2-1 and with their backs against the wall, the Boston Bruins erupted for three first period goals Thursday night, two on the power play, and also got a big short-handed tally from Brian Rolston to beat the Canadiens soundly by a 5-2 score and turn the best-of-seven series to a best-of-three headed back to Boston for Saturday's matchup. A huge hit leveled on Richard Zednik by Kyle McLaren when the 6'4 defenseman clotheslined the Montreal forward with a minute and change left in the game, turned the contest into a marathon in the late going as the Canadiens attempted to exact revenge on the Bruins for the hit. The late-game ugliness took away from the fact that Bruins employed an effective left wing lock to frustrate the Canadiens in the neutral zone and held the offensive chances to a minimum, giving up a pair of power play goals to Richard Zednik. P.J. Stock, Bill Guerin and Martin Lapointe also scored for the Bruins, while Byron Dafoe had a solid game in net, turning aside 26 of 28 Montreal shots.

This year's Bruins have fans reminiscing about the glory days when the likes of Stan Jonathan, Terry O'Reilly, Cam Neely, and Jay Miller, a/k/a the Big Bad Bruins, made it a miserable night for all comers. A blue-collar, in-your-face style of play has Boston battling for the top spot in the Eastern Conference nearly three-quarters of the way through the season, eyeing a legitimate chance for home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs and a shot at Lord Stanley's chalice. Did I mention an in-your-face style of play? This year's charges have racked up 65 fighting majors so far (second in the NHL), and their passion is best exemplified best by banger P.J. Stock (99 penalty minutes, 15 fights), a blood 'n' guts forechecker who has endeared himself to the Bruin faithful by toeing the line time after time against a lethal list of the NHL's toughest hombres and holding his ownat leastdespite his diminutive stature: He's a mere 5-10, small stuff on the fight circuit. Stock so impressed the Bruin brass with his fistic abilities that they felt able to trade away to Phoenix 6-4 mega-don Andrei Nazarov, who used to walk the Bruin beat with fists in tow. Stock's nonstop tenacitynot to mention a piston-like left handhas served as the perfect tone setter for the team this year.

Run the numbers and you'll find around a 25 percent drop of activity in the neighborhood of the rough guys. And you don't have to be a member of Mensa to figure out why: rule changes. The number of minor penalties being whistled for obstruction has transformed the NHL experience into the power-play experience. Quicker line changes and shorter overall game lengths have kept teams from milling around on the ice surface, eliminating those opportunities for less-than-casual conversation among the league's premier pugilists. But there's a plus side for those who can't get enough of the grill-denting: While saber rattling has taken an overall hit around the circuit, the rule changes have at least brought back the heavyweights. Fighting this season has fallen almost exclusively into the ready and able handsor fistsof the league's legion of nasty boys. A glance through the nightly penalty summaries reveals the usual suspects: Worrell, Cairns, Stock, Ray, Low, and Shelley, to name just a few.

En plus de combler une lacune sur le plan de la robustesse, Odjick est un joueur francophone, ce qui n'est pas à dédaigner non plus.
