Scoresheet Hockey January 25th, 1999 Hello Again: I must admit I did not see the All-Star game on TV (I spent the day skiing, getting some much needed exercise.) But the newspaper accounts made it seem like a pretty good game (sorry I missed it!) If this really is the last year for Gretzky then he is going out in pretty good style - winning the All-Star MVP is pretty darn impressive. Too bad it doesn't look like his Rangers will make much of a splash in the post-season this year, as it would be fun to watch the Great One battle for one more Stanley Cup. Speaking of Stanley Cups, how about multi-winner Keenan getting fired up in Vancouver? Canuck's GM Brian Burke can blame Keenan's coaching, but it seems to me that the talent is not particularly great in Vancouver either. We'll have to see what kind of a job new coach Marc Crawford (who won a Cup with Colorado just 2 years ago) can do. If you have some Canuck players on your team maybe this move will increase the points they score for you?

Extractions: Admiral Logo, 1979-1998 In the summer of 1977, Lloyd Pettit, former hockey announcer and radio broadcaster, and his wife Jane made the decision to move their semi-pro hockey team, the Milwaukee Admirals, up from the US Hockey League to the IHL. The Pettits had taken over the team the previous season, after playing four seasons in the USHL. The USHL was planning on becoming an amateur Junior League team, and the Pettits wanted to field a professional team in Milwaukee. The Pettits purchased the club in the mid-1970's from Erwin Merar, who owned an appliance dealership. The top selling line of appliances was named "Admiral," and when Merar purchased the independent Milwaukee Wings in 1971, he decided to use the name for his team. The Admirals got a new logo for the move to the IHL (the famous sailor on skates), and a new home at the Milwaukee Exposition and Convention Center and Arena, now known as the Midwest Express Center. The Admirals made it into the Turner Cup Playoffs that season under head coach Gene Ubriaco (the first head coach of the Chicago Wolves), but lost to eventual champion Toledo. That first season saw a former USHL player get his feet wet in the Admiral front offices: Phil Wittliff, rookie-of-the-year forward (and leading scorer) with the Admirals back in 1972-73. The history of the Admirals has centered around Wittliff on the ice; with the exception of his time off after his near-fatal car accident in January of 1988, Phil has been the guiding force in on-ice hockey operations, acting as head coach and general manager numerous times during his tenure with the Admirals. The 1996-97 was his last as the head cach of the team, but he continues on as Executive VP and General Manager.

You can also visit Hypercat's homepage Or if that religion is not good enough for you (but dammit, it should be) you might try the Temple of the Puck And now, the NEWS Up first we have all the preexpansion deals today. Teams that made out like bandits are Tampa Bay, who got a world class goaltender for basically nothing, and San Jose, who also got a top notch goaltender for nothing. This preexpansion juggling has become a tradition in the NHL, just like preplayoff clowning, post-allstar break unicycle riding, and of course mid-season elephant training. It is a pity that post playoff acrobatics (see Bobby Orr) never "took off" (Ed. note, yes it is a miserable pun, but it was worth it) Of course the news we're all waiting for here is the commentary on the new Nashville Predators. Well, Nashville here you go, meet your new team: (Original team and comments included, all players rated on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is Tony Twist, and 10 is Peter Forsberg. Just as an advance, hint, there are no 10's here).
