Extractions: When the Blue and White teams took the ice for the under-35 Michigan Hockey Old Timers game Friday, it was just a fun exhibition game - the score did not matter. Featuring recent Michigan hockey graduates from David Oliver to Brendan Morrison, with 2,000 fans on hand to watch - about 1,985 more than last year - the players were just there to have a good time. But as the game developed, something interested happened (With apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer) ...

Mail Me In Person: Since I live in San Jose, I pretty much only have access to the Sharks, so here are the things I have to say about them and a few other players that I've met: SHARKS Jeff Friesen: Freeze is probably the greatest signer in person for the Sharks. Almost always stops and signs all that is given to him. Takes his time in signing "JF." Vincent Damphousse: Vinnie is another very good Shark in person for autographs. It's no wonder considering the crowds he had to face in Montreal. Not only is he very nice, but he has one of the best sigs in the NHL. Owen Nolan: Owen is nothing like Vinnie and Freeze. He only stops if there are just a few people around, but he won't say no to an autograph if he is on foot, like at a practice. He has improved a lot since the beginning of the season. Brad Stuart: Stuey is awesome on and off the ice. He sometimes goes out of his way to make the graph nice. Marco Sturm: Sturm has started to stop less and less now. He probably stops about 20% of the time, if that.

Extractions: NHL.com Shields has improved steadily over the last four years. NEW YORK (September 14, 1999) - In today's National Hockey League, where 18-year-old rookies are no longer uncommon, there is still room for the occasional late bloomer. Take San Jose Sharks goalie Steve Shields. After starting for four years at the University of Michigan and setting an NCAA record for career victories (since surpassed by Dallas Stars' backup and fellow Wolverine Marty Turco), Shields, by his own admission, still wasn't ready for the spotlight of the NHL. Originally a fifth-round choice of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, Shields began his professional career with South Carolina of the East Coast Hockey League in 1994-95. Later that year he was promoted to Rochester of the American Hockey League, where he led the Americans to the Calder Cup Championship in 1996. Shields played in two games for the Sabres that season, and split the next two years between Buffalo and Rochester before being traded to San Jose for the 1998-99 campaign. Shields saw the most extensive action of his career in 1998-99, and he did not disappoint, finishing with a 15-11-8 record in 37 games. He also recorded four shutouts and a strong 2.22 goals-against average, the lowest of his career.

Extractions: Source : Tom Canavan, Associated Press, 04.10.03 The Bruins aren't being so open about starting goaltender Steve Shields, who had 26 saves Wednesday night. Shields, who didn't have much of a chance to stop either of Jamie Langenbrunner's two goals, wants to play Friday. Bruins coach Mike O'Connell said Thursday that he wants to think about it. "I am confident in what I do," Shields said after the Bruins practiced at a rink in Upper Montclair. "I don't go out of my way to display it and tell people I should be playing. "Everyone thinks they should be playing, but that's the way I feel," added Shields, who made a spectacular skate save on John Madden in the second period. "I don't want to come across as being arrogant, but I feel I should always be playing." O'Connell's other choices are Jeff Hackett and Tim Thomas. Hackett hasn't played since breaking a finger in mid-March. Thomas only appeared in four games all season. Whatever happens, Shields said he would be ready. "I'm not too concerned,"

Supplanted by J.S. Giguere as the Anaheim starter before January, Shields got very little offensive support despite playing well in net for the Mighty Ducks.
