Extractions: January 15, 1999 DANVILLE - After growing up the northwest side of Chicago and playing hockey there, Ryan Reid never thought the prospect of playing in Butte, Mont., would excite him. That's how desperate Reid was after being released by the North American Hockey League's Chicago Freeze before the season began. Tired of playing pickup games and sitting by the phone, Reid headed for Big Sky country and the Frontier League in early December. "I was nervous and disappointed," Reid said of his release. "I thought some team would pick me up. I know I didn't want to sit and wait." Butte is the fourth-biggest city in Montana, making it the equivalent of an average Chicago suburb. And although the Frontier League is junior A, it's not the same level as the NAHL, where Reid played for Chicago in 1997-98. After a few weeks in Montana, the Wings came calling. Danville assistant coach Josh Mervis remembered Reid from last season, and Head coach Dave Peters traded Craig Piscopink for the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Reid before Christmas break. Reid scored the last two goals of Saturday's 5-4 win over Springfield, has played in three games so far and will be in the defensive rotation today and Saturday, when the Wings (12-18) host second-place Soo (23-11).

Playing on a line with superstar center Mark Messier, the the 14-year NHL veteran gave the Rangers a big offensive boost by scoring 41 goals and setting up 41 more for 82 points in 69 games. Verbeek's 17 powerplay goals led the Rangers and his six game-winners were second on the squad. "The Rangers didn't want to lose him as a player on their team... We had to work hard to get him," said Dallas General manager Bob Gainey, who did not disclose the terms of the deal. The 32-year-old Verbeek missed a chunk of the season with a separted right shoulder, which he injured March 1, but still finished third on the team in scoring. He has 821 points on 413 goals and 408 assists with 2,234 penalty minutes in 984 career games. Dallas continued its roster reshuffling by also signing defensive-minded left wing Dave Reid Wednesday.
