Extractions: ORONO, MaineChris Heisten (Anchorage, Alaska) scored with 1:05 remaining in regulation as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears are 3-1-1 with the tie while Western Michigan goes to 2-3-1. The Broncos struck first, just 2:53 into the tilt, when Pat Dwyer (Great Falls, Mont.) and Brent Walton (Elmira, Ontario) teamed up to find Paul Davies (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) on an odd man rush on the power play. Davies beat UMaine netminder Frank Doyle (Guelph, Ontario) for his second goal of the season. The Black Bears answered back just over two and a half minutes later when Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) scored his fourth power play goal, and fifth overall, with a blast from the high slot. Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) found Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) with the puck and he gave to Shields. It was the first tie in a game that saw four ties and four lead changes. The Black Bears took their first and only lead of the day late in the first period when Kariya won a faceoff in the Western Michigan zone to Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec), who ripped a shot from the blueline at 19:18. The Black Bears held the lead the majority of the second period. Western Michigan had several great chances to get the equalizer midway through the period when it had a five-on-three advantage for 1:44, but several outstanding defensive plays from Troy Barnes (Pembroke, Ontario) and Robert Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) and excellent netminding by Doyle kept the score 2-1. The Broncos did however get the tying goal at 16:46 when Reid Yantzi (Tavistock, Ontario) found Dana Lattery (Cochrane, Alberta) who was able beat Doyle.

Extractions: December 27, 2000 ESTERO, Florida - The University of Maine hockey team defeated Clarkson University in the opening round of the Everblades College Classic in Estero, Florida, 4-2 on Wednesday evening. The Black Bears advance to the title game of the tournament to be held at TECO Arena on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. Clarkson took the early lead against Maine when freshman Mike Nagai took a perfect centering pass from senior Don Smith and knocked in his own rebound at 4:45 of the first for his second goal of the season. Maine got on the scoreboard when it took advantage of its third straight power play opportunity with a man-advantage marker at 15:58 from Martin Kariya. Robert Liscak put the Black Bears ahead at 5:53 of the second period. Francis Nault scored his first collegiate goal at 9:04 of the third period to push the cushion to 3-1. Just 73 seconds later, sophomore Kevin O'Flaherty made it a one-goal game converting on a rebound opportunity at the top of the crease. With just 34.3 seconds remaining, Dan Kerluke sealed the victory for Maine with an empty net goal for the final 4-2 score.

Extractions: After missing out on numerous scoring opportunities in the first two periods, Northeastern took advantage of a 5-on-3 in the first minute of the third period, as senior Mike Ryan netted his 10th and 11th goal of the season with two power-play goals, 37 seconds apart to lift the Huskies to 3-1 victory over host Clarkson in non-conference action at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y. "It's tremendous," said NU head coach Bruce Crowder of his team's current three-game win streak. "We are doing a lot of the little things well. We haven't taken many bad penalties and we're getting the job done." After the second period, Clarkson's Randy Jones was whistled for spearing and given a game disqualification. The Huskies, who still had 1:49 remaining of a previous power play, immediately capitalized on the two-man advantage. Tim Judy and Mike Morris assisted on the first goal. Then, Jason Guerriero and Judy connected with Ryan in the low post for the game-winner. After Northeastern took the lead, the Golden Knights continued to take penalties, which didn't help their cause. Meanwhile, the chances Clarkson was able to generate were thwarted by Gibson, who finished the game with 26 saves.
