Matchup Breakdown The Sports Store Erik Rasmussen: Great expectations Feb. 24, 1999 More Next Generation profiles Erik Rasmussen was the No. 1 U.S. prospect at the '96 draft. (Allsport) Find a high school boy playing hockey in Minnesota and ask him about his ultimate hockey dream. He'll probably say he wants to be honored as the state's best player, earn a scholarship to the University of Minnesota, be picked in the first round of the National Hockey League entry draft, sign a lucrative pro contract and play for a Stanley Cup contender. Sounds a bit unrealistic, doesn't it? Well, for most high school kids it is, but not for Erik Rasmussen If you haven't heard of Rasmussen yet, you aren't from Minnesota and don't follow the Buffalo Sabres. The 21-year-old center has spent the last four years in the limelight since being named his state's Mr. Hockey for 1994-95. Rasmussen, who also played at the University of Minnesota, took the fast track to the NHL. Two years after his final high school game and just one year after being chosen by Buffalo in the first round of the NHL draft he began his pro career with the Sabres.
