Extractions: The Sporting News We heard a lot about the stars from the Colorado Avalanche during the Stanley Cup playoffs, and the Avs brightest star continues to keep winning accolades. Joe Sakic picked up the Hart and Lady Byng trophies at the NHL Awards ceremonies, as well as the Pearson Trophy as the players' choice for MVP. "Wow, this has been a pretty good week," Sakic said as he accepted the Hart Trophy. That's quite a mouthful from Sakic, who's the NHL's least-quotable star. Denver reporters grumble about Sakic's inability to say much of anything interesting. Most of his press conference material during the Stanley Cup finals was ripped from the hockey handbook of clichés. Not that Sakic isn't a nice guy; he is genuine and self-effacing. There's good reason. "Joe Sakic hates talking about himself, squirming like someone with pucks down his hockey shorts when his name comes attached to a question," writes John Branch of The Gazette of Colorado Springs, Colo. "His Croatian-born parents taught him long ago that it isn't polite to talk about yourself. You don't want to be considered a braggart, they said." It's good to see a good guy win, and to hear something as refreshing as modesty. But spend time around hockey players, and you'll find them to be the best guys in sports.
