Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER The Isles' Mark Parrish is checked by the Sabres' Jay McKee. The Islanders' need for a front-line winger has been so pronounced lately that Alexei Yashin occasionally has been flanked by the likes of journeyman defenseman Sven Butenschon and pluggers Claude Lapointe or Arron Asham. But Oleg Kvasha capped another active game on the top line by notching the tiebreaking goal at 8:42 of the third period - his seventh score in 15 games - as the Isles came back to beat dead-last Buffalo, 3-1, last night at Nassau Coliseum. "Olie's been playing really well for a little while, just by using his size, strength, speed and tenacity," Peter Laviolette said. "When he does that, he's pretty hard to stop." It marked the fifth time this season (5-15-2-1) the Isles couldn't be stopped when trailing after two periods. Garth Snow (28 saves) again was stellar in Chris Osgood's absence for the Isles, who had dropped their previous two games. "It's a different mind-set when you're playing more," Snow said. "I obviously don't want to let the guys down. I'm counted on more now than I was before."

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Goooaaaaaallll: Oleg Kvasha and Isles have reason to be excited as his third-period goal helps lift them into seventh in East. There were no bold guarantees about making the playoffs from the Islanders. It's just that their recent stellar play and their stable coaching situation dictates they are the much safer bet to qualify than the turmoil-laden Rangers. Goals 65 seconds apart by Oleg Kvasha and captain Michael Peca early in the third period were enough to springboard the dinged-up Isles into All-Star weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens last night at Nassau Coliseum. Their fifth win in seven games also vaulted the Isles (12-4-0-2 last 18) over Montreal into seventh position in the Eastern Conference. "The goal always is to move up and it seems like there's an ability to move up every time out," Peca said. "What's happened the last couple of months, is you're starting to see a little separation (in the standings)." The Isles, who also got 21 saves from Garth Snow and an empty-netter from Mark Parrish (team-best 20th), have won eight games in each of the last two months.

Extractions: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers dominated the Toronto Maple Leafs for the second straight game. This time, they did it on the scoreboard, too. Simon Gagne, John LeClair and Mark Recchi each had a goal and assist, leading the Flyers to a 4-1 victory over Toronto in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarter-final Friday night. DALLAS (AP) - The eighth-seeded Edmonton Oilers went from thinking about pulling off an upset to acting very, very upset. Scott Young scored two first-period goals and Mike Modano had a goal and two assists as the top-seeded Dallas Stars beat the Oilers 6-1 Friday night in a game that featured 39 penalties, several brawls and the ejection of both captains.

Extractions: by Rodi Blokh What is happening? Is this the same league we were watching last year? Nah it couldn't be could it? Everything seems to be upside down in the NHL right now. None of the big spenders are at the top, none of the big players are dominating, nothing is happening as it should. Somebody stop the madness The NY Islanders, the worst team in the NHL last year, are dominating the league, winning 4 out of their first 4 games, all on the road. In their home debut on Saturday, they almost beat the high-octane, Cup favorite, Red Wings, until a late goal and overtime tally gave the Isles their first loss of the season. Osgood, a pre-season pickup is playing great, as are the off-season acquisitions Mike Peca and Alexei Yashin. But neither of these established stars are leading the team in terms of scoring. That title can only be handed to Mark Parrish, who has eight goals in his first five games, including a hat trick against the Devils on Thursday. Yes, Mark Parrish. Not Jaromir Jagr. Not Pavel Bure. Parrish. At this rate, he is on pace to score 66 goals.

The Thrashers then tied things up in the third on two quick goals. Jason Wiemer answered with a shorthanded tally to help the Islanders re-gain the lead in a 5-4 win on Saturday. In the game, defenseman Radek Martinek returned from a rib injury suffered in training camp. Just 24 seconds into the game, Adrian Aucoin was called for taking down Dany Heatley after a giveaway in the Islanders' end. The Thrashers registered just one shot on the ensuing power play. On the next shift, the Dave Scatchard line came right down and gave the Islanders the lead at the 3:05 mark. A giveaway in the Atlanta end, started with a hit by Arron Asham, enabled Jason Blake to fire a slapper on net that Milan Hnilicka knocked away with his catch glove. The Islanders followed up and kept the puck in the zone. Scatchard wound up getting the puck at the top of the left faceoff dot and beat the Atlanta goaltender top shelf.

It was the Islanders second overtime game in as many contests. Claude Lapointe had the first superb scoring opportunity three minutes into the game on a breakaway. Philly goaltender Roman Cechmanek waited out the assistant captain's move and snuffed it out with his right pad. Jason Wiemer, following up the play, took out Cechmanek and was called for goaltender interference. The PK unit shut down the penalty without giving up a shot. Brad Isbister then had the next good scoring chance four minutes later when he was robbed from point-blank range. Alexei Yashin's centering pass skipped in front and went right to the Islanders' winger, who snapped a shot that Cechmanek gobbled up.

NYFansOnly.com -- Fantasy Island: Parrish Preaches To Faithful Scott Howes Date Jan 9, 2003 Islander forward mark parrish has been preaching fireand brimstone recently, converting hundreds of fantasy hockey owners with http://nyfansonly.theinsiders.com/2/86495.html
Extractions: Islander forward Mark Parrish has been preaching fire and brimstone recently, converting hundreds of fantasy hockey owners with his performance over the last three weeks. Last season, Parrish joined the 30-30 club, although it was not home runs and stolen bases at which he excelled. The sturdy right winger notched 30 goals and 30 assists last season, posting a career best 60 points. The former Florida Panther will be just 26 years old come February 2, and hopefully will be a mainstay for the Islanders for years to come. Unlike most of the Coliseum crew, Parrish got off to a pretty good start this season. He scored in 3 straight games, and posted 3-1-4 and a +2 rating over the first 5 contests. But after picking up a goal in a 3-2 loss to the Coyotes at the Coliseum on October 29, Mark went on an awful scoring drought. For the next 10 games, Parrish failed to find the net, recording a -7 mark over that period. On the positive side, he did continue to work hard, as is his style, and was credited with 5 assists over that span. But after 19 games, his totals were a disappointing 4-6-10 with a -5. Clearly this was not the kind of production that Islander fans and Fantasy coaches were looking for. As a result, Parrish was dropped all over the place in Fantasy leagues.
