Extractions: November January 27, 2001 The Return Of Mario Many hockey card and memorabilia collectors have been complaining over the last few years about the lack of a superstar to drive the hobby forward. Although Wayne Gretzky has retired, his cards and memorabilia are still strong sellers but collectors are becoming a bit overwhelmed with the amount of Gretzky cards on the market. Many of us thought that Paul Kariya or Jaromir Jagr would take over as the hobby giant but unfortunately the Great Ones skates have been too hard to fill. Until December 27, 2000. Thats when number 66 made his return to the NHL and gave both the National Hockey League and the hockey card and collectibles hobby a much-needed facelift. Super Mario has already netted 14 goals and added 12 assists in the first 13 games of his historic comeback. Clearly, Mario Lemieux has not missed a step, picking up where he left off as the worlds most dominant and dangerous player.

Extractions: Boston Bruins 1995-1996 Wing Born: February 26, 1957 At the time of his retirement in 1997, Joe Mullen had scored more goals (502) and points (1,063) than any American-born player in NHL history. He earned three Stanley Cups, two Lady Byng Trophies, a Lester Patrick Award and a First Team All-Star berth in his career. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000. Mullen is a native of New York City and grew up playing roller hockey in the "Hell's Kitchen" section of Manhattan. After playing four years of junior hockey, he went on to play collegiately at Boston College, where he became an All-American in both 1978 and 1979. As a junior, in 1978, he even led the Eagles to the NCAA championship game against rival Boston University. Following college, Mullen was recruited to be a member of the fabled 1980 U.S. Olympic "Miracle on Ice" team that won the gold medal at Lake Placid. However, because his father was ill at the time, he opted to instead turn pro and use the new income to help out his family. In August of 1979 he signed with the Blues. He was sent down to the CHL for two seasons though, where he proceeded to win both the Rookie of the Year and league MVP awards, respectively. From there he made the jump to the NHL, where, over the next 15 years he would play with the Blues, Flames, Penguins and Bruins. The speedy and tough goal-scorer was a big fan-favorite wherever he played, and his never-say-die attitude made him a winner both on the ice and off.

Joe Mullen grew up in a rough and tough neighborhood in New York known as "Hell's Kitchen," where only the strong survived. His father Tom, who worked at Madison Square Garden as a member of the ice crew, introduced Mullen to hockey at an early age. The elder Mullen would bring home discarded sticks for his four sons Tom, Kenny, Joe and Brian to use after school as they honed their skills on roller skates on the blacktop of a school yard right across the street from the apartment building, which was located on 49th Street between 9th and 10th avenues in Manhattan. The Mullen brothers would play pickup games until the sun went down and they could no longer see the roll of black electrical tape that they were using as their puck. The concrete ground of the school yard, enclosed by a chain-link fence, became their hockey rink which helped paved the way to the NHL for two of the four hockey-loving brothers, Joe and Brian.

Extractions: Joey Mullen The most prolific scoring American-born player in NHL history received little fanfare when he played in his final NHL game. But that type of exit seemed to symbolize the career of Joe Mullen. Mullen, an ultimate team player who neversought the individual spotlight, retired the same night as Mario Lemieux. Who would have ever guessed that a kid from New York's tough Hell's Kitchen neighborhood would ever make the National Hockey League! He and his brother Brian (who also enjoyed a lengthy NHL career) used to have to carry axes in their equipment bags as a form of self protection. Mullen's 16-year NHL career was spent with the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. Although never flashy, he was a consistent goal scoring threat and a great team player. A gentleman on the ice, he was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy on two occasions. But he will always be remembered as the first U.S.-born player to score 500 career goals and the first American to record 1,000 career points. Mullen's hockey career began at Boston College where he recorded 212 points in 111 games for the Eagles. He then played three years with Salt Lake of the CHL where he was named the league's top rookie during the 1979-80 season. The following year, he led the CHL in scoring with 117 points and was named the league MVP.
