Extractions: December 1, 2001 There are some goals that can define a season. Freshman Jason Grinevitch's blast from 15 feet late in the third period on Friday could be that goal for the 2001-02 Nanooks. The rocket shot emphatically broke a five-game losing streak by the Nanooks, handing the team a 2-1 victory over the third-ranked Michigan State Spartans. A small crowd of 3,000 fans roared as UAF took its first lead of the night and then continued to go nuts as the Nanooks held off a couple late flurries to secure the dramatic victory. "I felt like I was on top of the world," Grinevitch said. "That's a huge goal for us." Michigan State swarmed the UAF net in the finals minutes. With its own goaltender Ryan Miller pulled in favor of an extra attacker, the Spartans got a shot right in front of the net that UAF netminder Lance Mayes reached to smoother next to the post. The Spartans raised their sticks in anticipation of a goal, but the red light never went on and referee Brian Aaron immediately waved to indicate it wasn't a goal. "I knew it caught some red, but I knew it wasn't over," Mayes said referring to the red goal line. "We had to battle through that last minute to get the win."

As it did the night before, the Crimson struck for three tallies in the second frame, beginning with a Moore power play tally at 7:36. It was the 100th point of Moore's career, making him the first Harvard player to reach career point #100 since his brother, Steve '01, joined the exclusive company two seasons ago. Aaron Kim (Deerfield, IL) gave the home team a 3-0 lead at 14:26, flying airborne across the crease and tipping in his first of the season off a rebound of a Rob Fried (Macon, GA) shot. Dennis Packard (Kingston, PA) got the third in the flurry of goals, burying a slapshot just over two minutes later.
