Extractions: 4/15/02 - Because the Senators tanked it, the Leafs wind up playing the Isles. How convenient that the Senators could only beat Boston in the final week, thereby giving the Leafs a chance to get first in the East, but then do their best to avoid fifth place and another doomed matchup against their Ontario rivals. Disgusting. I can't believe, as the Undertaker would put it, the lack of respect being shown the Maple Leafs. Most of the hockey world hold Boston, Philadelphia, and New Jersey in much higher regard than the Leafs. New Jersey is hot, and I'm scared to death of playing Jersey again, but Boston and Philadelphia have both struggled of late, and for them to be deemed as "the class of the East" as they have for months in a conference where there really is no powerhouse, is ridiculous. There IS no class of the East. The Leafs finished with 100 points, good for third OVERALL in the NHL. I can't recall a season in which they finished so high. And yet, the list of contenders tend to place the Leafs near the bottom, sixth or seventh best. That's bullshit. Most analysts that pick the Leafs to win say Leafs in 7. I don't think it will be so close: Leafs in 6, but it will be one of those 3 games to 1 series that look closer than they actually are. GO LEAFS GO.

Extractions: Most recently, McCauley was traded in February 2003 to San Jose, in exchange for Owen Nolan. As a young rookie this tyke landed 24 points in 39 games in the 1998-99 season, but missed the later half in result of an injury. The season of 2000-01, McCauley was limited to just 14 regular season games. But McCauley would bounce back. When the playoffs rolled around Alyn made his presence felt as he hit a hot stretch and played in ten playoff games, which led the Leafs to the second round in the playoffs. After showing the Leafs his skills and abilities, it appeared as though he had become a staple in the team diet. In 2001-2002, McCauley appeared in all 82 games for the Leafs, wrapping up with six goals and ten assists. By Julie Tobin, St. Lawrence College, Kingston, Ontario.

Extractions: Ian Tomlinson/AllSport This is one that, surprisingly, Devils fans still don't seem upset about, but in the end they will wonder why it was done. It ripped my heart out right when it was made. The Devils traded Jason Smith Steve Sullivan and the rights to Alyn McAuley to Toronto for Dave Ellet, Doug Gilmour and two draft picks. Gilmour was past his prime and Ellet was average. Meanwhile both Smith and Sullivan were young, talented and showed up every night to play hard nosed hockey. So now I sit typing this in my Chicago apartment with my Smith jersey on. At the same time, Jason Smith is a top defenseman in the NHL, leading the

Ian Tomlinson/AllSport The dumbest move, among a long string of dumb moves in club history, was allowing Steve Sullivan to leave Toronto for Chicago in order to protect Dmitri Kristich. Kristich became a bust and was sent to Washington where, no surprise considering the rise of other former Leafs, he has become rejuvenated. Meanwhile, Sullivan leads the Hawks in scoring and would be leading the Leafs...

Host, Incorrect Person Two Leafs win the Stanley Cup? Host, Survey says number one answer! Fans have been waiting a long fifty-six years for the cup to return to the capital of Ontario, so how realistic is it to say that the cup could be here sooner than one thinks? It can be safely said, that any anti Leaf would find this type of offense a serious threat, where as without Kovalev this would be that less effective. A player of his Calabar takes the pressure of Sundin, and Mogilney, and gives the opponents another concern. Now we come to our main problem. A solution that is not so clear, as if it werent not for this, our cups odds would be good. Our defense, I would like to says its average, but its created with a bunch of player who are just there to get the job done, nothing more, and sometimes less. With exception to Svehla and Kaberle the rest of the squad has been inconsistent and has seen in the two most previous games, the reason why we are not in the top three of the conference.

Top Shelf NHL Info Standings Leaders TV Schedule Ed Belfour Toronto Maple Leafs 2002-2003 Season Preview With approximately one week until the grueling eighty-two game schedule begins, Leaf goaltender Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour is already hearing the catcalls from the fans. Having to undergo the daunting task of taking over for fan-favorite Curtis Joseph, Belfour has been less than spectacular thus far in Training Camp. If the Leafs are serious about contending for Lord Stanley's Cup, then he will be counted on heavily to break his habit of letting in the first shot of each game. So far, he has let in the first shot in preseason games with the Sabres and Canadiens as well as in the annual Blue-and-White exhibition. In the twilight of his career, he faces a big challenge in trying to make the Leafs fans forget about Cujo. Leafs fans do have to be ecstatic with the continued emergence of Alyn McCauley from last Spring. In the playoffs, the ex-Devil showed why he was a high draft pick, as he won crucial face-offs and scored fifteen points in twenty games. In the exhibition season, he continues to work magic with Mikael Renberg, as McCauley recently had his best game against Montreal where he scored two goals, including the game winner. Look for McCauley to have a big season centering the Leafs' second line.
