Official Website Of Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Hockey Club team was to begin competing in the nowdefunct Upper-Penninsula hockey League. Howard, and Harold played on that team, as well as the legendary newsy lalonde. http://www.soogreyhounds.com/alumni/thename.html
Extractions: The Name: Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds While the Soo Greyhounds have only been members of the Ontario Hockey League since 1972-73, the name dates back to just shortly after the First World War. According to local hockey historian, Wilf Ross, an un-named Soo team was to begin competing in the now-defunct Upper-Penninsula Hockey League. Officials considered having a name selected by the general public, but the team's coach, George MacNamara, had an idea of his own. He apparently asked that the team be called the Greyhounds because "a Greyhound is much faster than a wolf," a reference made to the already established rival club, the Sudbury Wolves. The team competed for just a few seasons in the Upper-Penninsula League before moving in the N.O.H.A. Senior "A" loop. The team won the Allan Cup in the 1924 season, and many believe should have won the Cup the year previous as well. Besides MacNamara, other coaches of the Greyhounds included the likes of Bun Cook and Don Grosso. The team competed in the senior ranks for several seasons before the formation of the N.O.H.A. Junior "A" League. It is this version of the Greyhounds which immediately preceeded the current OHL Greyhounds.

Ontario Lacrosse Hall Of Fame newsy lalonde, from Cornwall, would quickly be recognized as an offensivethreat, much like he was in hockey (Lanken,1984). lalonde http://www.olhof.com/history.htm
Extractions: Lacrosse, together with hockey, shares recognition as one of Canada's two official National sports. It's origins date back hundreds of years. Lacrosse has had lasting influence on the culture of the province of Ontario. Ontario has, by far, the largest and most active number of registered participants of an organized lacrosse body in Canada. Even though there is a Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the number of annual inductees is limited by a quota and thus there are many deserving of recognition who will never be inducted. The Evolution of Box Lacrosse In Ontario Student at Acadia University, Nova Scotia Lacrosse in Canada has seen a tremendous uproar over the past decade, but the history of the game dates far beyond the recent success. Lacrosse has its roots firmly placed in Canada and has grown from a Native pastime to a televised spectacle filled with incredible athletic ability and toughness. Lacrosse was re-confirmed by Parliament as the National summer Sport of Canada in 1994. Today, the Canadian Lacrosse Association recognizes four separate disciplines in the game of lacrosse: Box, Men's Field, Women's Field and Inter-Lacrosse. Box Lacrosse may be the most widely played lacrosse game now in Ontario and is a uniquely Canadian game that is best described as a game of speed and reaction (www.lacrosse.ca, 2002).

George Hainsworth Hainsworth launched his pro career as a 28 year old rookie in the Western CanadaHockey League with newsy lalonde's Saskatoon Crescents (later the Sheiks) and http://www.hockeyresearch.com/jwood/bios/george_hainsworth.htm
Extractions: Turning Back the Leafs George Hainsworth George Hainsworth Born: Toronto, Ontario, June 26, 1895 Died: Gravenhurst, Ontario, October 9, 1950 Inducted in 1961 Hainsworth began his minor hockey when the family moved to Berlin, Ontario (renamed Kitchener after the First World War). The 5'5", 180 pound netminder starred with the Kitchener Juniors of the Ontario Hockey Association and quickly moved up through intermediate and senior ranks winning the Allan Cup in 1918. Hainsworth launched his pro career as a 28 year old rookie in the Western Canada Hockey League with Newsy Lalonde's Saskatoon Crescents (later the Sheiks) and starred for three years until that league folded. Upon the recommendation of Lalonde, he replaced Georges Vezina in the Canadiens goal. At 31 years of age, Hainsworth was an experienced rookie who wasted no time in establishing himself in the NHL. Assuming the goaltending mantle from Vezina for the 1926-27 season, he became the first winner of the Vezina Trophy as the best goaltender in the NHL for allowing the fewest goals over the course of a season, and captured the award for the next two seasons as well. He won a pair of Stanley Cups with Montreal, in 1929-30 and 1930-31. In 1928-29 he set two records for goaltending that will never be challenged. He turned in 22 shutouts in 44 games and posted a goals against average of 0.98 goals allowed per game. Because of his calm, unflappable nature used to drive opponents to distraction while lending confidence to the Canadiens players, Hainsworth received an unusual accolade when he was appointed team captain in 1932-33. He possessed the ability to communicate his confidence and calm to his teammates through solid, sometimes spectacular performances. Over the course of his career with the Canadiens, Hainsworth logged 75 shutouts in the regular season and six more in the playoffs while maintaining a goals against average of 1.85.
Extractions: The original leagues Decade-by-decade At the turn of the century, the best hockey players didn't play for money. There wasn't any. In 1900, hockey was a game for amateurs in Eastern Canada, and anyone who played, did so strictly for the sport. Many did, and several amateur leagues began to spring up. Newsy Lalonde was one of the original free agents. Games in these leagues were spectator attractions, and the various champions would challenge each other for bragging rights and a chance to win the Stanley Cup, a trophy donated by the Queen of England's representative in Canada that became the symbol of hockey supremacy. Teams that won the Stanley Cup in its early days invariably resided in the Montreal to Ottawa corridor, where the top players of the era seemed to content to pursue their passion. That began to change when the game was discovered along the Eastern seaboard of the United States, and in pockets of Minnesota and Michigan.

Extractions: Puckerings Lacrosse Home Research Articles Stats ... About me Welcome to the Puckerings Lacrosse page. As you may know, lacrosse was Canada's official national sport for some time, before hockey was promoted to share the honour. The history of lacrosse is just as colourful, just as long, and just as important as that of hockey. What's a lacrosse page doing on a hockey site? Hockey and lacrosse are both national sports of Canada, and deserve equal respect. On top of that, in the early days many big-name hockey players such as Newsy Lalonde played lacrosse during the summer, and hockey during the winter. The two games share many similarities, with enough differences to make them distinct. And most importantly, I felt like it. Lacrosse research on the internet In April of 2002 I founded the Society for Canadian Lacrosse Research . If you at all interested in the history of this great sport, please join as soon as possible. It's free! Information on joining up is available on the website. The SCLR is currently made up of less than a dozen, but they're some of the sharpest guys you'd ever want to meet. There is a mailing list for lacrosse discussions, and several editions of the newsletter have already been published. There is also a stats archive, on which I hope to have stats from all time, eventually. If you looking for lacrosse history online, really the first thing you should do is to visit SCLR member Paul Whiteside's wonderful
