The code: Kvasha Out For Two Weeks written by Kevin Schultz Go Isles (10/24/02) Islanders forward Oleg Kvasha will miss at least the next two weeks after suffering an ankle fracture during the second period of Tuesday's 4-1 loss to Carolina. He was left the ice after being hit by a Bret Hedican slapshot. The Islanders acquired Kvasha and Mark Parrish from Florida for Roberto Luongo and Ollie Jokinen in 2000. Kvasha has no points in six games this season. Go Isles opened on August 16, 2001. GoIsles.net is an unofficial fan site of the New York Islanders, created by Kevin . Jeff Friesen put the hosts on the board late in the first. Patrik Elias, Oleg Tverdovsky, Sergei Brylin, and Jamie Langenbrunner notched the other goals. Both teams took turns testing each other out in the early stages of the contest. The Islanders generated the first three quality scoring chances in the first five minutes. One of the best opportunities came when Oleg Kvasha set up Alexei Yashin in the slot in the first minute. Yet, the center missed the top portion of the Devils' cage. Jason Blake intercepted a New Jersey clearing pass three minutes in when the Isles' forechecking created an offensive zone turnover. Blake waltzed in, but missed the net with his backhander.

But goals by Oleg Kvasha and Michael Peca 1:05 apart in the final period gave the Islanders the lead and Garth Snow and his defense protected it the rest of the way in a 3-1 Islanders' win over the Canadiens on Thursday night. The victory was a huge one for the Isles as they leap-frogged over the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference playoff race heading into the All-Star Break. The Islanders defense was masterful in front of Snow, limiting the Habs' offense all evening. Kenny Jonsson, Mattias Timander, Roman Hamrlik, Radek Martinek and Sven Butenschon once again held the fort as the team dressed just five blueliners. It didn't take the Islanders long to put the visitors on the powerplay. Just 15 seconds in, Shawn Bates was called for tripping in the neutral zone. Peca posted the lone scoring chance that was started by a chip up the left wing boards by Snow. The captain raced into the Canadiens' end with Kvasha in tow. With Kvasha going hard to the net, Peca tried a wrister that Jose Theodore caught.
