Extractions: Coming out of nowhere, big Mike Johnson was the Leafs' 1997-98 biggest surprise. With 15 goals and 47 points in a full 82-game schedule, Johnson tied Boston's Sergei Samsonov for the rookie scoring title, and finished fourth in his bid for the Calder trophy. He was Toronto's second-best point-producer (behind Mats Sundin) and was named the NHL rookie of the month in December. Johnson was signed out of college by the Leafs on March 15, 1997, in a bidding war of sorts with the Rangers, Whalers, Mighty Ducks, Bruins, Canucks and Oilers. He stepped in and played 15 games with the Leafs to end the 1996-97 campaign, collecting a pair of goals and four points. Johnson had a stand-out career with Bowling Green University, including finishing as amongst the league's top scorers in the 1996-97 season. With the Leafs, Johnson signed a 13-month contract which included an $800,000 signing bonus, but apparently, money wasn't the only reason to sign. Johnson told local press that "the fact that I'm from Toronto and that they provided me with an opportunity to play right away was important." "He's got good speed but he's also a very smart hockey player," said former Leafs coach Mike Murphy. "He scored a lot of goals this year, but his coaches say he's a better playmaker."
