Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Dec. 30 - It was certainly a tough task deciding upon a No. 1 star from the Colorado Avalanche in its 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. Just about everyone on the Avs played well, so much so there could have been a dozen angry players who would have been justified storming the Pepsi can-filled press box demanding to know why they were passed over. No wonder, then, the one with all the star power chose L.A.'s Luc Robitaille as the night's No. 1 constellation. It was probably easier that way. But Robitaille's two goals aside, the Avs were the real stars at the Pepsi Center, putting on one of their better performances of the season in the team's second straight victory. Colorado got goals from four players and could have easily scored a half dozen more. Meanwhile, the Avs put on a penalty-killing clinic in subduing the team that had bounced them twice before this season. The Avs can now go safely into the year 2000 with a winning record, and the savory thought of many more home games coming up.
DenverPost.com - Terry Frei Dec. 28 The Colorado Avalanche and the National hockey League bothlist defenseman alexei gusarov's hometown as Leningrad. Following http://uss001.infi.net/denver/post/scolumns/frei1228.htm
Extractions: Denver Post Sports Columnist Dec. 28 - The Colorado Avalanche and the National Hockey League both list defenseman Alexei Gusarov's hometown as Leningrad. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, though, the city on the Gulf of Finland returned to its historic name of St. Petersburg. The name change shouldn't, and won't, erase the memories of the city's horrific suffering from 1941-44, during the invading Germans' siege. In the holiday season 58 years ago, as many as 4,000 Leningrad residents were dying daily of starvation and exposure. Men. Women. Children. The cold was paralyzing, food was scarce and water had to be scavenged from damaged and open water mains. Gusarov's parents, Vasily and Galina, were there. The story of the siege - and their experiences - has been passed down. "My mother told me everything," Gusarov said after the Avalanche practice Sunday in Englewood. "She tried to teach me and explain everything." This requires a preface. Gusarov is one of seven players who have been with the Avalanche since the franchise moved from Quebec in 1995, yet he remains among the most obscure. That's mostly his choice, since he prefers not to do interviews. For official purposes, his English is limited. He is an intelligent and prideful man who doesn't enjoy the frustration of being unable to say exactly what he means. Russians are raised on the Cyrillic alphabet, and it makes the transition to English tougher. Yet other NHL Russian players have become amazingly eloquent in English, and Gusarov can converse when he desires. This is his way of retaining his barriers of relative anonymity and privacy.

Hockey Links Rendez Vous '87 In February, 1987, the NHL All Star Game was set aside for one season. In its place was two game series in Quebec City that pitted the NHL All Stars against what many people call the strongest team ever iced - The Soviet National Team! There was no clear winner as each side won one game a piece, although the Soviets did score 1 more goal than did the NHL All Stars. Wayne Gretzky led all players with 4 assists, but he was upstaged by the spectacular play of big Russian left winger Valerie Kamensky. Kamensky would later be allowed to play in Quebec City with the Nordiques when he was first cleared to play in the National Hockey League. Below is a game by game box score followed by a table of complete scoring statistics.

No, our hiatus is more like when Bil Keane takes a break from doing "Family Circus" and lets little Billy do the cartoon, except our guest writers are 200% cleverer than that annoying little priss. Extractions: The Rangers, in an eight-player deal (seven favoring Pittsburgh), landed former 1st round Ranger draft pick and All-Star talent Alexei Kovalev. The somewhat-obscene fiscally driven deal is the ultimate example of the big market, small market realities that face the NHL. The deal will likely serve as a prelude to what is shaping up to be the mother of all Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. Of more immediate note, however, the Rangers reclaim a vital piece of past glory in Kovalev. Together with a healthy Pavel Bure, the two dynamic goal-scorers make for the most potent combination of snipers in the league. Provided, of course, Bure regains top form following his myriad of knee surgeries.

Bergeron was drafted by the Nordiques in 1974, but never played for the team. I assume he was in the front office at one point. Thanks to Celine Audy for this very unusual scan. The following is a complete listing of players who suited up for the Quebec Nordiques from the team's 1972 WHA debut through the final, lockout-shortened 1995 season. Some of these players appeared in one game only; others had successful careers of 10 seasons or more with Les Nords .
