He showed up the next day and practiced the rest of the week. But on the following Monday, he called in again. "I'm sick," he said. After practicing the rest of the week, he called in the next Monday, repeating, "I'm sick." "What gives?" asked his exasperated coach. "Are you planning to call in sick every Monday?" "No, sir," Messier said. "My sister is in a bad marriage, and every Monday morning before work, I go over to console her. One thing leads to another, and we end up making love all day long." "With your sister?" said the coach. "That's disgusting!" Messier replied, "I told you I'm sick." Theo Fleury was talking to Kevin Hatcher and said, "I don't know what to get my wife for her birthday. She has everything, and besides, she can afford to buy anything she wants, so I'm stumped." Hatcher said, "I have an idea, why don't you make up a certificate saying she can have 60 minutes of great sex, any way she wants it. She'll probably be thrilled." So Fleury did. The next day Hatcher said, "Well? Did you take my suggestion?" "Yes, I did," said Fleury. "Did she like it?" Hatcher asked. "Oh yes! she jumped up, thanked me, kissed me on the forehead and ran out the door, yelling: 'I'll be back in an hour!' "

Extractions: There is little doubt that the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union is the single greatest hockey tournament, perhaps sporting event, ever. Due to the political and cultural differences, and the dramatic ending, it is unforeseeable that anything could rival 1972. However the 1987 Canada Cup did rival it. While the Cold War was thawing, the drama was almost equal to 1972. And unlike 1972, the tournament was filled with great play on the ice. In fact most will agree that the 1987 Canada Cup highlighted perhaps the greatest hockey ever played. "I don't think you'll ever see better hockey than what was played in that series," said Wayne Gretzky. "For me, it was probably the best hockey I've ever played."

Hockey Links Rendez Vous '87 In February, 1987, the NHL All Star Game was set aside for one season. In its place was two game series in Quebec City that pitted the NHL All Stars against what many people call the strongest team ever iced - The Soviet National Team! There was no clear winner as each side won one game a piece, although the Soviets did score 1 more goal than did the NHL All Stars. Wayne Gretzky led all players with 4 assists, but he was upstaged by the spectacular play of big Russian left winger Valerie Kamensky. Kamensky would later be allowed to play in Quebec City with the Nordiques when he was first cleared to play in the National Hockey League. Below is a game by game box score followed by a table of complete scoring statistics.

Extractions: Turning Back the Leafs Grant Fuhr Grant Fuhr Born: Spruce Grove, Alberta, September 28, 1962 Grant Fuhr was the Edmonton Oilers first-round draft choice (eighth overall) in 1981 after an all-star season with Victoria of the Western Hockey League. He made his NHL debut in 1982-83 and was a Second Team All-Star. Fuhr also finished second in the voting for the Vezina Trophy behind Billy Smith that year and received serious consideration for the Calder Trophy, which went to Dale Hawerchuk. He went on to become one of the winnigest goaltenders in NHL history. Fuhr's arrival in the NHL coincided with Edmonton's rise to power in the league and the Oilers' great scoring ability allowed him to set a record for goaltenders with 14 assists in 1983-84. Though his goals-against averages were often high behind such an offensive-minded team. Fuhr earned a reputation as a goalie who would not surrender the big goal. He was at his best in the playoffs, helping the Oilers to win the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. The 1987-88 season also saw him win the Vezina Trophy and earn a selection to the First All-Star Team after leading the league in games played, wins, minutes and shutouts. Fuhr missed the first 55 games of the 1990-91 season after being suspended by the NHL and was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a multi-player trade on September 19, 1991. With the emergence of Felix Potvin as a star in Toronto in 1992-93, Fuhr was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres on February 2, 1993 for Dave Andreychuk. Fuhr shared the Jennings Trophy with Dominik Hasek for in Buffalo in 1993-94 but was sent to the Los Angeles Kings in a trade on February 14, 1995. His poor play in Los Angeles had many thinking his career was over, but he was signed by the Blues on July 14, 1995 and his career was revived.
