In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. The Chicago Blackhawks will conduct a media conference call with right wing Theo Fluery and General Manager Mike Smith on Friday, August 16. Time and conference call information will be distributed later today. "The Chicago Blackhawks have had an interest in Theo Fluery since the end of the season. We think Theo is still a top-level player in our game," said Blackhawk General Manager Mike Smith. "We've gone through this process with Theo with our eyes open and we know what his personal situation is. We believe Theo can help our team and we can help Theo." "We are extremely excited to add a player of Theo Fluery's caliber to our hockey club," said Blackhawk President William W. Wirtz. "I feel that Theo has a lot to offer our team. His off-ice issues have been much publicized. However, we feel that Theo has taken the necessary steps to addressing his issues." "The Blackhawk organization has been willing and able to provide the necessary support systems in aiding and assisting an individual in his aftercare program," said Mr. Wirtz. "Since signing with the Blackhawks as a free agent, Bob Probert has established himself as a husband and father of four children as well as a model citizen in the community."

Extractions: Preview: New York is searching for any kind of emotion as they back into the playoffs. The Sens high powered offense [3rd in the NHL] will roll unless the Isle resurrect the mariner logo , and turn the series into a fight with hockey played on the side. New Senators Vaclav Varada, and Rob Ray will be tested early. Preview: Boston roared out of the gate to start the season, then hit 2 mid-season losing streaks [5 games each] to shock them back to reality. Normally getting production from the bottom half of the roster pushes a team over the top, but in this series I am going to focus solely on one match up; Joe Thornton [36G,65A - 3rd] vs Martin Brodeur [2.02 GAA - 4th]. Brodeur wins that confrontation, but since Boston has not won a Cup since 5 months before I was born, I am going with the B's.

Extractions: Theo Fleury's recent diving and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against Dallas, and his subsequent criticism of his teammates, may possibly indicate that he has returned to the passionate and spirited play at which he excels. On the other hand, one hopes that it does not signal the beginning of a return to the selfish and self-destructive behavior that he exhibited with the Rangers. Although Fleury is an admitted recovering substance-abuser, this should not necessarily discount or excuse his past behavior. Fleury has always maintained that his off-ice problems were separate from his on-ice performance. His on-ice antics would seem to indicate someone with definite anger-management issues and someone with little respect for their peers or for authority. [Although it technically occurred off-ice, I think we can consider his assault of the San Jose Sharks' mascot an on-ice antic.] Theo Fleury Fleury has always walked a fine line between displaying an intense passion for the game, and displaying an infinite capacity for idiocy. Recent comments from Fleury would seem to indicate that his recovery from substance abuse has done little to change his character. He continues to exhibit an exaggerated sense of self-importance, and he continues to diminish his own role in his substance-abuse problem.

Extractions: Archives Contacts Friday, December 13, 2002 Sports Sports Column Mike Szwaja Chicago Blackhawks fans were holding their collective breaths Wednesday night because they weren't sure what was going to happen. Would Theo Fleury snap? Would Bryan Trottier, the black-hearted head coach of the New York Rangers, try to exorcise Fleury's demons? I know I was worried. The whole situation was primed for disaster, something Fleury is no stranger to. Fleury was appearing in only his fourth game of the season for the Blackhawks, after his indefinite suspension for violating his NHL aftercare program ended last week. The Rangers are Fleury's old team, and I'm sure his old teammates want nothing but for Fleury to overcome his troubles and live a happy life again. However, the Rangers haven't exactly been angels on the ice this season, so I didn't know what to expect. Head coach Bryan Trottier was suspended for two games earlier this season for instructing his players to start a brawl. This might not be such a big deal in hockey, but there were less than two seconds left and the Rangers were down 6-3. There was no motivational value in Trottier's instruction. Sutter found himself in a favorable situation, most likely, before the game even started. When Fleury first skated onto the ice, fans throughout Madison Square Garden cheered, many holding signs that read something like, "WE MISS YOU, THEO. GOOD LUCK!" (A sign of compassion from New York sports fans, was it really?) Sutter had to like that.
Lightning: Fleury Would Be Big Risk He is a worldclass hockey player, Lightning center Brad Richards said. It would be huge just to have a name like theo fleury on the team. . http://www.sptimes.com/2002/07/14/Lightning/Fleury_would_be_big_r.shtml
Extractions: published July 14, 2002 Did Lightning general manager Jay Feaster inquire about Theo Fleury because of serious interest or because the free-agent right wing is a distressed commodity who will play for a lot less than the $7-million he made last season? Hard to say because neither Feaster nor Fleury's agent, Don Baizley, will confirm contact. But they aren't denying it. Baizley did say his client will not make contract decisions until August. Fleury, 34, would seem an unlikely fit for Tampa Bay. Not that he wouldn't help. The Oxbow, Saskatchewan, native has 443 goals, is a seven-time All-Star and won Olympic gold with Canada at Salt Lake City. But Fleury, traded last month by the Rangers to the Sharks, is beset by personal demons and family problems that could make his signing and the team's financial investment risky. Fleury missed 20 games in 2000-01 after checking himself into an inpatient substance-abuse program. He lives in Santa Fe, N.M., near the sponsor he says has helped keep him clean and sober.

Dvorak's third-period goal earns Oilers 3-2 playoff victory over Stars EDMONTON (CP) - When Edmonton acquired Radek Dvorak from the New York Rangers last month, it was a move that Oilers fans were quick to criticize. But on Sunday, Dvorak became Edmonton's newest hockey hero. Dvorak's third-period goal proved to be the winner as the underdog Oilers earned a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars for a surprising 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven opening-round playoff series. The 26-year-old Czech took the puck at centre, split the defence and fired a shot past Stars' goalie Marty Turco at 5:38 of the third. more... Unheralded players score big goals to lead Oilers to 3-2 win over Stars EDMONTON (CP) - The Edmonton Oilers have struggled all season to ice a lineup that could score. On Sunday, the Oilers got goals from an unlikely source - Radek Dvorak, Georges Laraque and Fernando Pisani - in their 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars that gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead in their opening playoff series. "It's a testament to this team and the depth that we have," Oilers defenceman Steve Staios said. "We know that we need everybody we have to win hockey games.
