(Greg Ruffing/Daily Kent Stater) By Rob Thomas Daily Kent Stater The Netherlands connection of Els Brouwer and Arlette van Cleeff struck again over the weekend, powering the Kent State field hockey team to two more wins. Mid-American Conference foe Miami came into Dix Stadium on Friday afternoon and left with their tails between their legs. The Golden Flashes (12-3, 6-0 MAC) earned a 5-0 victory to raise their winning streak to 11 games. Though happy with the win, head coach Kerry DeVries was less than thrilled with the team's play. "Our game didn't show Kent State field hockey at its best," DeVries said. "Our passing was sloppy, and we didn't play as well as a team as we did in the past." Sophomore Helen Jerden scored Kent State's opening goal off a penalty corner, assisted by senior Meagan Class and sophomore Kristen Clayton. Approximately 15 minutes later, Brouwer found fellow freshman van Cleeff for van Cleeff's first goal of the game. With a 2-0 lead at the half, Kent State came out firing scoring on a Class goal from Jerden with less than four minutes gone in the second half.

Greg DeVries scored 2:29 into overtime to spoil Sather's debut as coach of the Rangers, giving the Colorado Avalanche a 4-3 victory Thursday night. Sather, the Rangers' president and general manager who replaced the fired Bryan Trottier on Thursday, saw his team rally from a two-goal deficit to take a third-period lead before losing its fourth straight. Alex Tanguay scored twice, including the tying goal with 4:18 left in regulation, and Peter Forsberg had a goal and two assists for the Avalanche, unbeaten in five games (3-0-2). When DeVries scored, Sather threw his hands up in disgust and tossed down his gum. Matthew Barnaby, Petr Nedved and Bobby Holik scored for the Rangers.

Washington Capitals The last Ranger game before the NHL All-Star break was one of the more anticipated games this season. Glen Sather made his Ranger debut behind the bench after relieving first year head coach Bryan Trottier just the day before. The Ranger GM began his tenure as coach with a playoff prediction and a determination that this was the only change that would sufficiently shake up the Blueshirts. And to their credit the Rangers did play a little better...but not good enough to get the win. Dunham continued to struggle in net and the Rangers defense was once again victimized by a more disciplined team. But New York did almost come back from a 2-0 deficit late in the second to win the game with a goal to Barnaby with 7 seconds remaining in the period and goals 28 seconds apart in the third.

Extractions: Playoff Calculator Click here to contact us! Every year for the playoffs, we provide a Playoff Calculator. Once the teams and matchups for the playoffs are set, there is a link from THE Hockey Pool home page labeled "Playoff Calculator". After you click on it, it prompts you to predict the winning team for each playoff round and how many games you think they will win in. Then, based on the playoff format for the year, it will present you with your predicted match-ups for the subsequent round and allow you to predict the winners again. Once your predictions are made all the way to the finals, the Calculator will look at how many games you predict each team to play in the post season. Then, based on the predicted number of games, the Calculator will compute the expected point output of each player in the post-season based on their regular season points per game. Does this give you a list you would want to draft from? Probably not unless you are really certain about who's going to win which match up, but it can give you an indication of which player you should draft first given the choice between a few equal scorers in later rounds. Drop us an email using the 'Suggestions, Comments, or Insane Ramblings' feedback option and let us know how you use the calculator or what could be added to make it more useful to you.
