Extractions: BOX SCORE SCOREBOARD BOSTON Byron Dafoe 's return to Boston wasn't any better than his departure. Dafoe made 36 saves and held Boston scoreless for two periods but Glen Murray scored his 16th goal of the season at 1:53 of overtime to lift the Bruins to a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers. Dafoe (2-2-0) made his first start against the Bruins since signing with Atlanta on Nov. 20. It was his second career start against Boston.

Extractions: July 15, 2002 - The Boston Bruins early elimination from the playoffs highlighted the B's major weakness: the total lack of mobile, puck-moving defensemen. As the series with Montreal wore on, rookie Nick Boynton emerged as Boston's top defenseman, as it became apparent that he was the only defenseman with the puck-handling skills and quickness to deal with the Canadiens' forwards. While that is a tribute to Boynton, it says volumes about the rest of Boston's blue-line corps. But can the Bruins upgrade their defense through the free-agent market? In the last three drafts, the B's have tried to address their defensive needs. They drafted Shoane Morrisonn in the first round in 2001, Lars Jonsson in Round 1 in 2000, and Boynton in 1999. Morrisonn almost made the team last year out of camp but was sent back to juniors for more seasoning. Earlier this month, the B's signed him to a big-league deal, meaning he'll get a fair shot in training camp. Word out of Sweden is that Jonsson will be the real deal eventually, but the question of when he'll make the move across the Atlantic is still up in the air. Add in Jonathan Girard, who at age 22 is still developing and has been up and down between Boston and Providence for the past three seasons, along with veterans Kyle McLaren (age 25), Hall Gill (27), and Sean O'Donnell (30), the Bruins may have a nice defensive nucleus down the road. Unfortunately, they need help now, and probably should address this immediate need via free agency. The problem is, there aren't many agile, puck-handling defensemen out there. One who comes to mind is Bryan Berard, a Woonsocket, R.I., native who played with the New York Rangers last season after coming back from a serious eye injury. The Rangers, though desperate for good defensemen, opted not to pick up the former Calder Trophy winner's option. Berard is probably looking to upgrade on the $2 million deal he had with New York, and the Bruins aren't exactly known as a cash-spending machine.
