Extractions: ORONO, MAINE-The University of Maine mens hockey team jumped out to quick start when defenseman Robert Ek tallied back-to-back goals at 6:43 and 17:00 of the first period, and it looked like a repeat of last nights dominating performance was imminent, as the Black Bears skated to the locker room with a 2-0 lead and momentum. Merrimack would have nothing of it however, scoring three-straight second period goals to set the stage for the third period. Trailing 3-2, UMaine attacked relentlessly, answering with three-straight goals to pull away from the Warriors 5-3. Ek scored both goals crashing the net from his point position. Barrett Heisten carried the puck from the lower faceoff circle to Merrimack goaltender Tom Welbys right, all the way around the net and up to the top of the other faceoff circle. When he broke towards the center, Ek broke from the point and was met with a cross-ice pass that he buried from the slot. Eks second goal, Dan Kerluke and Brendan Walsh had worked the puck out of the corner to Welbys left, and Walsh hit Ek with a pass from the blue line that EK one-timed off Welby and into the net. The Black Bears looked to be off to the races as the period came to a close.
