The man who time and time again sacrificed his body and soul for the game he loves. Toronto will never again see a hockey player who plays with such a fiery determination as Wendel. Being traded twice from the city he loves did not stop him from coming back a third time and despite the criticism, played with the same passion and ferocity as the Wendel Clark of old once did. He wore his jersey proud and his head held high. The colours blue and white flows through his veins. Nobody took the Maple Leaf lightly when Wendel hopped over the boards for one of his many intense shifts. If you look in his eyes, you could see the love he has for this great game, the team, the fans, and the city of Toronto. I watched in disbelief as Wendel announced his resignation from hockey, with tears of sorrow streaming down his face. I fought back my own tears that were threatening to spill from my eyes. He had never hoisted the Stanley Cup, and he never will as a player. It seems unjustified that a competitive soul like Wendel's never won the championship. Given the Leafs interest in signing free agent Wendel Clark, it is interesting to look back at the controversial event that took him from Toronto in the first place. Wendel Clark owes Toronto nothing. Never has an athlete left town after a trade with less debt owing to the team that brought him to the National Hockey League. When Clark was traded by Leaf General Manager Cliff Fletcher, he walked away after giving nine years of gristle, bone, heart, and health to a Toronto Maple Leaf hockey team that often did not deserve the effort that he gave nevertheless. Wendel Clark is a true hockey icon and stands as a classic hero to young hockey fans of the Leafs and indeed exemplifies good, tough Canadian hockey. Many a Toronto Maple Leafs fan will be marking down on the calendar the date of Quebec Nordiques October visit to Maple Leaf Gardens. There will be an emotional welcome for Wendel Clark as his fans give Wendel his proper farewell: on the ice in front of a full house at Maple Leaf Gardens. Trots sin otroliga passion till hockeyn påstår han idag att han inte ångrar sitt beslut: - I juni kändes det som om det var det rätta beslutet att ta. Tajmingen var utmärkt med tanke på att jag hade ett ganska bra slutspel samt att jag var tillbaka i Toronto, säger Clark som hade blivit unrestricted free agent i somras om han valt att fortsätta. Once again for Wendel Once again for Wendel Let's take a look back in time to when this love affair first began. Clark was drafted number one by the Leafs in 1985 and several years later, found himself wearing the big "C" on his shoulder. Back then, not many people would argue the fact that Clark was the heart of the team. The Leafs were in the dumps, but Clark, a great captain and player, was always a shining light. Of course, nothing lasts forever and when the likes of Doug Gilmour, Dave Ellett and Felix Potvin arrived, Clark was on his way out the door. After Clark bounced around the league for a few years, the Leafs traded away the best of their talent to get their once intrepid captain back from the New York Islanders. Like a house of cards in a hurricane, the Leafs quickly fell apart. To make matters worse, Clark got injured, making the trade a bust.

Extractions: Subscribe now! Chunky hockey sticks Thanks to all the readers that responded with information regarding the Chunky Soup stick offers from the mid-1990s. We spoke to quite a few people about these sticks and actually dug up two of the four stick offers. Here is the story as far as we have been able to gather. In 1992-93, there were two Wendel Clark Sher-Wood sticks available: one which was left-handed and the other which was right-handed. The sticks featured Clark¹s career statistics through the end of the 1991-92 season. In 1993-94, there were two Doug Gilmour Hespeler sticks (again, one left-handed, the other right-handed). These sticks included Gilmour¹s career statistics through the end of the 1992-93 season. According to the offer sheet, the offer expired March 31, 1994 or up to 7,500 sticks, which ever came first. The Gilmour sticks were available for $9.99 (to cover postage and handling) plus seven Chunky Soup labels. ³The Doug Gilmour Hespeler hockey stick features a 19-ply laminated handle, a three-piece blade with wrap around glas finish and a quarter-inch curve. The stick is finished in black with a black blade and contains a printed Doug Gilmour signature and player statistics.²
