Reusse: At 35, Ciccarelli remains strong in front of net Patrick Reusse, Star Tribune Published June 20, 1995 The phone had been ringing incessantly at Dino Ciccarelli's home in suburban Detroit since his team, the Red Wings, reached the Stanley Cup finals. It rang again, Dino answered and the other voice said: "The Devils in four." Ciccarelli fumbled his words for a moment and then said: "Who is this?" The voice came back with the same refrain: "The Devils in four." That is when Ciccarelli figured out the voice belonged to Neal Broten, his teammate for eight seasons with the North Stars. "There has been a lot going on in the past few weeks that reminded me of the good times in Minnesota," Ciccarelli said. There is the match with his best pal, Broten, with a first NHL championship going to the winner. "Neal has the Olympic

Extractions: ~Last update: 08/01/99~ HOCKEY HEADLINES Trades/Signings/Retirements News/Other Injuries Streaks/Accomplishments Trades/Retirements/Signings/Firings Well, in the 3 weeks that I was gone there were tons of signings, trades etc. So I've decided to just have up-to-date news, not try and recap everything while I was gone. Florida Panthers right wing Dino Ciccarelli has announced his retirement. He was 9th in all time NHL scoring with 1,200 points in 1,232 games with five teams. Ciccarelli, 39, said the back injury that limited him to 14 games last season as the reason for ending his 19-year career. The Phoenix Coyotes signed right wing Shane Doan to a multiyear deal, the team announced Tuesday. Doan inked a two-year contract worth a total $1.6 million in salary and bonuses, The Tribune, a newspaper serving suburban Phoenix, reported Tuesday. News/Other Same thing as above, I'm just gonna do the recent news. The Senators Alexi Yashin is likely to hold out for season, wanting more money. As it stands,Yashin, despite being under contract for one more season at a $3.6 million salary, plans to hold out. He is eligible to become a restricted free agent after the upcoming season. Hockey fans have been patient in two previous contract disputes between Yashin and the Senators, said Potechin. "The third time, there's no understanding. He's just greedy." The NHL's vote scheduled for Wednesday on Mario Lemieux's bid to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins is expected to take place before the Hall of Fame center formally takes control of the team. League officials say that timetable is not unusual. NHL spokesman Frank Brown said league approval to sell the team, if it comes, would be made contingent on the bankruptcy court in Pittsburgh also approving the deal. The league's governing body will vote in New York. "Sometimes you move into a house that needs (to be) painted," Brown said. "This is no different."

Many sports fans who would rather watch the Super Bowl with a bunch of beer-swilling buddies than be present at the birth of their first child often recite that tired old saw about hockey being more violent than any other sport. But is it true? Hockey people say the sport isn't violent, and those who disagree with them should be beaten soundly by

Extractions: Moments to remember More great moments in NHL history When Dick Irvin retired from the Chicago Blackhawks in 1929, the fledgling NHL team realized it would to have find a way to keep this special talent in the organization. So they made him coach. Irvin, who had been one of the Blackhawks most prolific scorers, was just as successful as off the ice. He led Chicago to a second-place finish in his rookie season, and was then recruited by Toronto to take over its team for the 1931-32 campaign. Irvin led the Maple Leafs to their first Stanley Cup victory that year, and took the team to the championship finals six times in the next eight seasons. Unfortunately for Toronto fans, the Leafs could never capture another Stanley Cup under Irvin, and in 1940 he resigned to take over the coaching reins in Montreal. Over the next 15 seasons, Irvin won three more Stanley Cups and established himself as one of the greatest hockey minds that ever existed. When he retired, he had more coaching victories than anyone else, and his record remained intact for more than a quarter century.
CBS SportsLine - Moments To Remember Marcel Dionne was one of hockey's most prolific scorers, netting more goals thananyone in history dino ciccarelli also staked out his territory.(Allsport), http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/ce/feature/0,1518,1841923_60,00.html
Extractions: More great moments in hockey history He never won any individual trophies, nor did he play on a Stanley Cup winner during his 17 seasons in North America. Still it is no exaggeration to say that Borje Salming made a lasting impact on hockey and was arguably the most important European ever to have suited up in the NHL. Salming, a star defenseman on the Swedish national team, joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for the start of the 1973-74 season. By then, European players had made up a significant part of rosters in the upstart World Hockey Association, but were largely ignored by NHL clubs who operated under the assumption that European players weren't tough enough to play "their" game. It was a perception Salming knew he would have to overcome quickly, but it wasn't easy. The newcomer became a favorite target of goons around the league, who assaulted him physically and verbally with taunts such as "Chicken Swede."
