Extractions: In terms of effort, two of the Massachusetts hockey team's last four games have been some of its best performances of the year. In terms of Hockey East standings, these two contests have resulted in zero points in conference. So what's a coach to do to prevent his young team from getting discouraged? "If we play like that, more often than not, we're going to succeed," coach Don Cahoon told the audience at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday. The two losses, a 2-1 overtime decision to New Hampshire on Jan. 17, and a 3-2 defeat to Northeastern on Saturday, left the Minutemen tied with Boston University for the crucial fourth place position in Hockey East. With two road matchups this weekend against No. 6 Boston College and Providence, UMass will hope to break its recent slump of four losses in its past five games. And with every point a precious commodity in Hockey East, the Maroon and White could use a boost to overtake the Terriers for the final home ice berth. The Minutemen have split their first two games with both the Eagles and Friars, but on Jan. 3 and 5 they beat the teams in succession (3-2 in Chestnut Hill and 5-4 at the Mullins Center against PC). Boston College will be without the services of freshman Patrick Eaves, out for the season with a fractured vertebra suffered on Dec. 7. But the Eagles will have a healthy Ben Eaves, the team's leading scorer, back in the lineup after the junior sustained an injury in the first period against the Minutemen, as well as Ryan Shannon, who missed the Jan. 3 contest because of the World Juniors Championship.

The junior tri-captain led the Red Devils in scoring with eight goals and three assists. She tallied two game-winning goals and was a perfect 2-for-2 in penalty strokes this season. Giorgio earned her second straight selection to the All-Region team and made her third appearance on the All-Centennial squad. The senior goaltender posted five solo shutouts this season, while sharing two others as Dickinson came within one of the school record. Giorgio started in 72 consecutive games throughout her career, recording a school record 21 shutouts in four seasons.

Freshman Halsey Monger and Laura Kado each added their own three goal hat tricks to the event. "We were ready for this win," said California head coach Jill Malko. "In our loss to Duquesne, we didn't feel outplayed. I think we came out of that game knowing that we can beat these East Coast teams. Those losses were confidence builders."
