Extractions: TKACHUK RETURNS TO COYOTES Phoenix Coyotes All-Star left winger Keith Tkachuk, who was involved in a contract dispute and suspended by the team last Friday for refusing to play in the final preseason game, has returned to the team in time for the season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Coyotes had asked Tkachuk to sit out preseason games while they continued contract re-negotiations. The situation became confusing when Phoenix requested that he play in the final preseason game against Dallas. Acting on prior instructions, Tkachuk refused and was suspended. The two sides have agreed to discuss a contract extension at the conclusion of the 1997-98 season. Last season he became the first player in NHL history to lead the league in goals while having more than 200 penalty minutes. ST. LOUIS RE-ACQUIRE KELLY CHASE The St. Louis Blues today made a late adjustment to their roster before Wednesday's season-opener by re-acquiring right wing Kelly Chase from the Toronto Maple Leafs for future considerations. Chase, 29, played his first five NHL seasons (1989-94) with St. Louis, and still ranks third on the team's all-time penalty minutes list (1,005), behind only Brian Sutter and Barclay Plager.

Of Denver's 315 athletes, 176 students received either a bronze (3.00-3.29), silver (3.30-3.69), or gold (3.70-4.00) medallion based on their GPA. Over one-fifth of Denver's student athletes were awarded with the gold medal. The University of Denver athletic program has come a long way since its transition to Division I four years ago. From the surprise success of the ski team that won back-to-back national championships the last two years to the revival of the hockey team as a national powerhouse, the Denver athletics program is quickly developing a winning tradition. It takes a special athlete to prosper in the classroom and on the field. A gifted few are able compete at college sports highest level, and flourish under the strict academic standards that are presented in a college such as the University of Denver. Their interest was not casual but rather clinical. Canadian head coach Mark Habscheid called advance scouting "the homework" that is part of the coaches' lot at this tournament. Meanwhile assistant coach Mario Durocher was several hundred kilometres away in Sydney, winding up his advance work on the teams in Group A that Canada could face in cross-over play in the elimination round that begins on January 2 in Halifax. "Homework" is a fitting description: Toil that goes largely unseen but is necessary for passing on-ice tests. When the coaches are not on the ice with the players at practice or behind the bench during games, they’re either doing advance scouting at games, reviewing videotape of upcoming opponents, or meeting to discuss strategy. The world junior tournament is an intense couple of weeks for the players but maybe even more so for the coaches.

For the second consecutive year, the Little East Conference field hockey championship belongs to Keene State College. Kelly Smith's goal seven minutes and fifty-seven seconds into the first overtime period lifted the Owls to a 1-0 victory over rival Plymouth State College to give KSC the 1999 title in a game played Sunday at Owl Complex. It was the second straight overtime- winner for Smith, the Tournament MVP, who sent KSC into the championship with a game - winner in OT against UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday. The winning goal, Smith's 16th of the season, was set up by a lead pass from Melissa Harnch-Smith. "We had a break-away and Melissa made a nice pass to me," said Smith, a junior forward from Lisbon, N.H. "I was open and I hit it hard and fortunately it went in." "After yesterday's game, I was pretty tired, but I wanted to find away to be in the play to get us the win," she said. "It was very appropriate that Kelly got the winner," said KSC coach Amy Watson. "She was all over the field today." The top seed in the Tournament, Keene State had all it could handle in the early going from the Panthers, who tested Owl goalie Lindsay Hamilton on several occasions. Megan Fournier was stopped on a pair of corner opportunities and Ang Grady had a shot from the right side that just missed the far post. Plymouth adapted well to playing on KSC's turf field. "Our style of play is conducive to turf. We're happy to play on it." said PSC coach Abby Burbank, whose team goes to 7-11. "It was a great championship game. Both teams played well throughout the game and that was great to see." "You put these two teams on the field and it doesn't matter what the records are, you're going to get a great game," added Watson. The statistics indicated the closeness of the game. Plymouth had a slim 12-11 advantage on shots and had a 15 to 10 advantage in penalty corners. Both goalies came up with big saves throughout the game. Hamilton had nine saves for KSC while Martha Dennery, the Panther's goalie, finished with five saves. Keene State (14-6) will now await word on a possible ECAC Tournament berth. "Winning this will help us, "Watson said. "There are a lot of other teams sitting out there in the same situation. We'll see where we end up." Smth's game winner was set up by a feed from Beth Chase (Kensington, NH.). "I just gave it a good hit and it went in," said Kelly, who notched her team and conference-leading 15th goal of the season. "It went to the corner and she probably didn't see it." Keene State, which had a 24-0 shot advantage, dominated play throughout the game.
