Colorado Avalanche | News DENVER ñ The Colorado Avalanche hockey Club announced today that the team hassigned defenseman raymond bourque to a oneyear contract plus an option. http://www.coloradoavalanche.com/news/nr10051695910.html
Extractions: DENVER ñ The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Raymond Bourque to a one-year contract plus an option. Bourque, who would have become an unrestricted free agent, could have tested the free agency market July 1 but instead opted to return to the Avalanche. ìThis is going to be great news to our fans,î said Colorado Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. ìTo have an athlete like Raymond Bourque commit himself to this organization and market before having a chance to be an unrestricted free agent indicates how special this city and hockey environment is.î Originally Bostonís first choice (eighth overall) in the 1979 Entry Draft, Bourque was acquired by Colorado on March 6, 2000 along with forward Dave Andreychuk. Raymond Bourque is the NHLís all-time leader for goals by a defenseman (403) and is second in assists (1,117) and points (1,520). He presently ranks ninth on the National Hockey Leagueís all-time point list. One of only three players (Gretzky and Coffey) in the history of the NHL to record 1,100 assists, Bourque is one of only five players to participate in 1,500 games and play in four decades. In addition, he has been selected to 19 consecutive All Star Games. ìRay is an impact player for our hockey club and every one of our players will be excited to know that he will be back with us,î added Lacroix. ìRay is in tremendous shape and is as strong as he has ever been. His arrival in March brought our organization to an even higher level in many ways, especially with his enthusiasm and offensive abilities.î

Brian Bahr/Allsport DENVER (AP) Raymond Bourque, who helped fuel the Avalanche's failed bid for the Stanley Cup, signed a contract Wednesday that will keep him with Colorado for another year. The 39-year-old Bourque could have tried his luck on the free-agent market beginning July 1, but chose to stay with Colorado. The contract was for one year plus an option, but other details were not disclosed. "The Avalanche is a very competitive and contending club and I am looking forward to continue playing in a great hockey environment," Bourque said. "Ray is an impact player for our hockey club and every one of our players will be excited to know that he will be back with us," said general manager Pierre Lacroix. "Ray is in tremendous shape and is as strong as he has ever been."

Robert Laberge/Allsport BOSTON (AP) Ray Bourque , the longtime leader of the Boston Bruins who won five Norris Trophies but never a Stanley Cup, got his wish for one more chance at a championship when he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night. "We limited ourselves to teams where Raymond Bourque would have a chance to win the Stanley Cup," Bruins general manager Harry Sinden said after a 5-1 loss to Ottawa. "It may not be his first choice; it may be. I'm not sure. We felt we had to do the best for the team as well." The 39-year-old defenseman was traded along with forward Dave Andreychuk for forward Brian Rolston , defenseman Martin Grenier, center Sami Pahlsson and Boston's choice of a first-round pick in either 2000 or 2001.

Extractions: photography by Dan Hamilton EXCERPT Professional sports have changed so much over the last decade; there are few happy endings anymore. Hockey is no different, as players constantly get shuffled, traded and moved from city to city because of contract problems. Player loyalty or allegiance to any one team seems to be a thing of the past. But on occasion a particular athlete can rise above it all and still earn a following that seems bigger than the uniform he is currently wearing. Such is the case with Raymond Bourque. In the 2001 National Hockey League playoffs, everything came together for the superstar defenseman, and Bourque was able to end his career with a Stanley Cup victory a rarity in the modern era of the game. Bourque began his NHL career with Boston in 1979. He remained with the Bruins, setting club records for most games played, most assists and most points, until March 2000, when he requested a trade to a contending team. A deal to the Colorado Avalanche gave his career new life and Bourque a chance at a championship. It took until the 2001 playoffs to achieve, but the perennial all-star and Norris Trophy winner finally got his name on the most elusive prize of all the Stanley Cup.

Extractions: 10:32 A.M. Everybody Loves Raymond Bourque , that is did you see him last night? The man was not about to go gently into that good night, and wasn't going to let his team go, either. Goal, assist, +2 rating, and some pretty, pretty highlights. I watched them all last night and this morning the joys of cable sports shows and I swear, when Phil Esposito (Espo!) on Fox Sports was breaking down the goal highlight, I got tears in my eyes. Yay, team. Colorado 2, Dallas 1 , and Game 7 is in Dallas tomorrow. Hope he (Bourque) stays if the Avs don't win the Cup this year. He's thirty-nine, yes, but he's built like a tree and just as strong and limber. He's got a while left in him. I think we're pretty fond of Chris Drury , too. He got the game-winning goal into the net by deflecting Bourque's wrister with his knee. Saw it coming, jumped into the air, tried to angle his stick properly, and just kneed the puck in instead. Great stuff (AVI clip available; can also see it from ESPN's NHL site in the video section at the top). He's the all-time playoff game-winning-goal percentage leader, too: six of his ten playoff goals have been GWs. And he's only a second-year player.

Extractions: T he Stanley Cup is more than just a trophy - it is the cup that dreams are made of. It exudes an aura and spirit that even the staunchest atheist can't deny. I have been lucky enough to see it up close in all its glowing glimmering glory. I imagined what it would be like to earn the right to call myself it's Defender. My heart beat faster, and I held my breath as I ran my fingers over the numerous engraved names. Some I remembered, and some I only recognized, but all the names I have respected. Hockey is more than a game. Much like the Stanley Cup that represents it, it is a legacy passed down from generation to generation. It is filled with tradition, history and honor. When I was young, my father used to tell me stories of such players as "The Rocket", his younger brother "The Pocket Rocket", Hector "Toe" Blake, Bobby Orr, and the amazing "Mr. Hockey". The stories were of great men scoring brilliant game winning goals, unleashing quick wrist shots, how they played through pain and injury and of the dedication it took to live their lives playing the game they loved.

Extractions: Defense, Shoots Left, 5'11", 219 lbs. Born - Montreal, Quebec, December 28, 1960. Boston's 1st choice, 8th overall, in 1979 Entry Draft. It was a surprise to all hockey fans when Raymond Bourque, after spending 20 illustrious seasons with the Boston Bruins, was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche in March, 2000 as the Bruins decided to pay back Bourque's years of dedication with an opportunity to win the Stanley Cup. Bourque has proven himself to be one of the steadiest and most reliable defenseman ever to skate in the NHL. The mystique began in his rookie season of 1979-80 when he captured the Calder Trophy and a berth on the First Team NHL All-Star squad. The five time Norris Trophy winner reigns as the Bruins' all time leader in assists and points and broke Bobby Orr's Bruins record for most goals by a defenseman in 1992 with number 265! Bourque later joined Denis Potvin and Paul Coffey as the only defensemen to notch 300 goals in a career! Bourque also became the fifth NHL player to record 1000 assists, joining such greats as Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne, and again Paul Coffey. Bourque, who has Captained the Bruins since the 1988-89 season, performed one of the classiest acts in hockey history on the night of December 3, 1988. On that night, Bourque and his Boston Bruins honored the legendary Phil Esposito by retiring his number 7. Bourque, who had been wearing Esposito's 7, removed his jersey at center ice, presented it to Esposito and was found to have worn underneath his original jersey, a new sweater with the number 77 - the number we now identify Bourque with!
