The Hockey Players Corporation :: Exclusive News As a hockey nation, Czechoslovakia was very successful. First of course wesplit; Czech and Slovak Republic, recalls Slovak forward peter bondra. http://www.hockeycorp.com/summernews/02-07-05-a.html
Extractions: July 5, 2002 - The Velvet Revolution was one of the few peaceful separations of a nation in the history of the world. Not a shot was fired. Nine years ago, the Czechs and Slovaks who had comprised Czechoslovakia simply voted to go separate ways, and the nation of Slovakia was reborn. Slovakia had briefly existed as a Nazi puppet state during World War II. After the war, it was reunited with the Czech Lands and became part of Czechoslovakia until 1993. As a hockey nation, Czechoslovakia was very successful. For decades, the Czechoslovaks usually placed in the top three in international competitions. Teams were made up of both Czechs and Slovaks, yet when separation took place, the Czech Republic remained in Pool A while Slovakia had to qualify for everything. The first big test was in the summer of 1993 when Slovakia had to qualify for the 1994 Winter Olympics. Recently retired NHL superstar Peter Stastny, who had defected to play in the NHL and had become a Canadian citizen, led the Slovaks to their first Olympic appearance. During that tournament, NHL scouts got their first look at future NHL stars like Zigmund Palffy and Miroslav Satan.

Extractions: February 01, 2002 - The game started an hour later than normal to accommodate ESPN. For the Washington Capitals, it was another horrific loss. One of those games that should leave a team frustrated, shaking their heads, and sneaking out the back door of the arena. It was a 4-1 loss to the Blues in a game where the Capitals looked out of place. The post-game scene was partially as expected. The Blues were laughing and cheering, while Capitals' star winger Jaromir Jagr sat in his stall with a look of disappointment. After all the reporters had left he just sat there wondering what was going wrong and what could be done to turn things around. The look in his eyes was one of frustration and uncertainty. As Jagr pondered the Capitals' predicament, his Slovak teammate, Peter Bondra was rushing through his post-game routine. One would think that after such a debacle Bondra would be hurrying to get out of the building to get home to his children and their All-Star break family vacation. But instead, Bondra had some important people waiting in a back hall of the MCI Center for him.
